Martin released on $25,000 bond
By BRIAN PORTER Managing Editor
Marco Martin, 23, a key defensive starter on the 2001 Mesquite Skeeters’ undefeated state championship football team, was arrested Aug. 10 by Dallas police on a charge of aggravated sexual assault with a minor.
The alleged crime occurred March 25, 1999, when the child, then 12 years old, was in foster care.
Martin was arrested and released later Aug. 10 on $25,000 bond.
The Dallas Police Department is not releasing any other information on the case, Crowther said.
Martin had no previous Dallas County criminal record, said Dallas County Sherriff’s Department Deputy Raul Reyna.
Martin was the defensive star of a super-talented Mesquite football team in 2001. He made 74 tackles, 32 of those unassisted, had five sacks, 16 quarterback hurries, defensed a pass and recovered a fumble en route to All-City Defensive MVP honors as selected by The Mesquite News.
“Marco is a good person,” said Steve Halpin, Mesquite High School football coach. “Marco has a good heart.”
Martin was a force on the interior of the defensive line for the Skeeters, which went 15-0 and won the first football state championship in the history of the Mesquite ISD. He was injured in the early moments of the state championship game, a 14-13 victory over San Antonio Taft.
Martin, a 2002 graduate of Mesquite High School, signed with Texas after his senior season at Mesquite.
