The “Art of Richard Tuttle” is on display at the Dallas Art Museum’s Barrel Vault, Hanley, Lamont, Rachofsky and Stoffel Galleries. Tuttle uses various materials to create works which defy categorization. The presentation includes 300 works.




Today-Dec. 3

A celebration of the works of James Brooks are on display at the Dallas Museum of Art. His work was first presented at the Dallas Museum of Art in 1933. The presentation includes works on paper and paintings spanning his career.




Today-Oct. 22

The Women’s Museum, a Smithsonian affiliate, today announced that it is premiering a new exhibit to North Texas; one that focuses on a celebrated, and often misunderstood, Hollywood icon: Marilyn Monroe. The new exhibit, titled “Marilyn Monroe: Exploited, Explored, Explained,” is sponsored by the State Fair of Texas and combines powerful artwork and photography with costumes and artifacts. The exhibit will be on display at the museum throughout the State Fair of Texas.

*The Dr Pepper Museum and Cadbury Schweppes Americas Beverages (CSAB), the makers of Dr Pepper, are bringing the rich history of Dr Pepper life during the State Fair of Texas with a wide ranging exhibit in the Texas Department of Agriculture’s Food & Fiber Pavilion in Fair Park through Oct. 22.

The two companies are hosting the exhibit to highlight an expanded partnership. CSAB recently agreed to give the museum access to more than $2 million worth of memorabilia and artifacts recently uncovered in its archives. Some of the nearly 70,000 items in the archives include authentic historic posters, a vintage electric Dr Pepper icebox, an early 1900s Dr Pepper syrup dispenser, and a Dr Pepper 8 oz. bottle vending machine. Fair-goers can walk through time with Dr Pepper, from its inception at a Waco pharmacy in 1885 through its explosive popularity in the 60s, 70s and 80s up to its status today.

The Dr Pepper exhibit in the Food & Fiber Pavilion will be open during normal Fair hours, 10 a.m. to 10 p.m., through the duration of the State Fair.

The monthly luncheon of the North Dallas Newcomers will take place at the Mary Kaye Building, 16251 North Dallas Parkway. Tours of the building and museum will take place from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Arrive 15 minutes prior to the tour. Lunch will be served at 11:45 a.m. The cost will be $25. Send check to F. Friday

*The Greater North Texas Orchid Society will meet for a program titled “The Best Kept Secret in the Gardening World: Hardy Terrestrial Orchids.” The event takes place at 8 p.m. at Texas A&M Dallas, education building, 17360 Coit Road. Doors open at 6:30 p.m. and refreshments are served at 7 p.m.

*Leukemia & Lymphoma Society will offer a charity wine-tasting event from 6 to 8 p.m. at WineStyles, hosted by Cecelia Daughenbaugh, benefiting the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society in honor of Aaron Romo of Rockwall. The event is free.

Daughenbaugh, a survivor of Non Hodgkin’s Lymphoma, and her team will participate in the Light The Night Walk, benefiting the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society, on Oct. 21 in Plano.

Aaron, 14, is in the eighth grade at Cain Middle School and a Rockwall resident. He was diagnosed with Hodgkin’s Lymphoma in May of 2006. He continues to receive chemotherapy treatments as he battles to defeat his illness.




Saturday

The Richardson Humane Society is seeking golfers and sponsors for the 5th Annual Canine Classic Golf Tournament to take place at the Waterview Golf Club in Rowlett.

Proceeds benefit the Richardson Humane Society for vet care and other expenses related to rescued dogs and cats.

Tuesday

Texas Watch, a leading statewide consumer group, will be in Dallas to conduct the fourth in a series of statewide activist trainings. The training sessions will educate citizens about how to be effective participants in the legislative process. With the Texas insurance crisis continuing to plague Texas families, the focus of the trainings will be on insurance and consumer law issues.

The event take place at 5:30 p.m. at UFCW Local No. 540, 11041 Garland Road. Participants include Alex Winslow, Texas Watch Executive Director; Neesha Davé, Texas Watch Grassroots Director; and area residents.

The Living Opera will conduct auditions for the 2007 season Oct. 14 and 15 at Southern Methodist University’s Meadows School of the Arts, Room B600.

Oct. 13-17

The United States Bowling Congress Coaching will hold a bronze level coaching certification conference from Oct. 13 to 15 at USA Bowl, 10920 Composite Drive in Dallas.

Training will prepare instructors to coach intermediate-level bowlers. The course will develop coaching skills in the four essential areas of bowling, including the physical game, lane play, equipment and the mental game. Videotaping, video analysis and instruction on giving lessons will be covered.

Oct. 21

Star-Lit, a children's literary festival featuring a variety of nationally-recognized children's book authors, is planning a benefit for South Dallas' Bethlehem Center to take place from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at St. Andrew United Methodist Church, 5801 W. Plano Parkway, in Plano.

Activities include presentations by all attending authors, on-site bookstore, book signings by all authors, food, face-painting, balloon animals and more.

The event is intended for children of all ages, parents, grandparents, teachers, and librarians. An admission of $10 prior to the event and $12 at door will be charged. Children under age two are admitted free. Tickets are available at www.star-lit.org.

Oct. 27

The International Furnishings and Design Association is preparing for its 8th annual silent auction to support two charitable organizations: Design Industries Foundation Fighting AIDS (DIFFA) and The Elizabeth Brown Scholarship.

This year’s silent auction will feature items from trade showrooms and design firms around the DFW area. In addition, there will be live jazz entertainment all evening long.

The IFDA Educational Foundation raises and distributes funds in the form of grants and scholarships to foster educational activities benefiting individuals and/or institutions in the home furnishings and interior design industry. DIFFA is one of the oldest and largest HIV/AIDS service and education programs in the nation. Since 1984, DIFFA/Dallas has provided un-earmarked monies to AIDS service efforts, thus providing for the direct care of persons living with HIV/AIDS.

The event will take place at Banks Fine Art, located at 1231 Dragon Street in Dallas, on Oct. 27 from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. and is open to the public.




Oct. 27-29

More than 200 of the world’s biggest names in skateboarding, BMX riding and aggressive inline skating will compete for Action Sports’ largest prize purse and the title of world champion when the LG Action Sports World Championships turns Dallas’ Reunion Arena into a Texas-sized skate park from Oct. 27-29.

The event is the culmination of the 2006 LG Action Sports World Tour, which has attracted more than 500,000 fans in seven cities across North America, Europe and Asia since the season kicked-off in June. It marks the largest Action Sports event ever held in Texas.

Athletes from 23 countries will compete at the event, including a host of X Games and World Champions. Some of the industry’s superstars expected to participate include Dave Mirra (USA), Bucky Lasek (USA), Bob Burnquist (BRA), Ryan Nyquist (USA), Jamie Bestwick (UK), Sandro Dias (BRA), Pierre Luc Gagnon (CAN), Andy MacDonald (USA), Rune Glifberg (DEN), Simon Tabron (UK), Ryan Guettler (AUS), Kevin Robinson (USA), Chad Kagy (USA), Taig Khris (FRA), Fabiola da Silva (BRA), Takeshi Yasutoko (JAP), Shane Yost (TAS) and Tobias Wicke (GER)

Tickets are available via all Ticketmaster outlets and at the American Airlines Center box office. Tickets will also be available at Reunion Arena box office on the days of the event.

Nov. 11

The Mesquite Symphony Guild will host a fashion show and luncheon Nov. 11 at the Hampton Inn Suites in Mesquite.

The fashion show will feature the 2007 debutantes and their mothers, all guild members, on the runway dressed in “Unforgettable Style.” The fashion show and luncheon is an annual event held by the guild to help raise money to support the Mesquite Symphony Orchestra.

The doors will open for the event at 10:30 a.m. At this time, the public will be given an opportunity to bid on items in a silent auction. The fashion show will begin at 11 a.m. and will be followed by a live auction of denim jackets designed and modeled by the debutantes.

Nov. 18-Jan. 1

The Trains at NorthPark, presented by Chase, will roll into Dallas with the most elaborate toy train exhibit in the state. With 40 vintage locomotives whizzing along 2,500 feet of track on a journey across America from the Golden Gate Bridge, to Mount Rushmore, through the heart of Texas and on to our Nation’s Capital and the Big Apple.

The Trains at NorthPark begins Nov. 18 and ends Jan. 1, 2007, during normal mall operational hours. Tickets are $5 for adults and $3 for children. Children under age 2 are admitted free.

The event benefits the Ronald McDonald House of Dallas.




Dec. 5-6
