Bragg named to succeed DeLamar as MISD AD
By BRIAN PORTER/Managing Editor
Steve Bragg, a 1979 graduate of North Mesquite High School and current North Mesquite football coach, has been named to succeed Mickey DeLamar as the Mesquite ISDs athletics director.
Bragg has coached and taught within the MISD for 22 years, with two years spent outside the district. He will assume duties as MISD athletics director on Jan. 3. DeLamar will retire in February.
“I can’t wait to get started and serve the community in this capacity,” Bragg said. “I want to make sure we continue the legacy that has been built in this athletics department and continue to build on the legacy which has been laid.”
He brings familiarity with the challenges of a district which has two Class 4A schools and three larger enrollment Class 5A campuses, along with a total of 13 campuses playing athletics. Bragg was an offensive coordinator and offensive line coach under Bill Taylor at Poteet, a Class 4A campus, from 1990 to 1999. He left for his first head coaching position at Pittsburg and the following year coached at Commerce.
Bragg was the head coach at North Mesquite from 2001 to 2006, where he compiled a 34-28 record. He holds a 54-33 all-time head coaching record.
“He’s a great problem-solver and has high expectations for what the future holds,” said MISD superintendent Linda Henrie, Ed. D. “His heart is with the kids.”
Bragg was selected among five finalists for the position. Among his first hires will be his successor at North Mesquite and an assistant athletics director.
