BRIEFS: Dallas Christian boys eliminated from playoffs

Dallas Christian boys fall in first round of basketball playoffs
In a back-and-forth affair, it was Midland Christian that had the answers late as it pulled out a 59-54 victory over Dallas Christian in a TAPPS Class 5A bi-district playoff game.
The Chargers ended their season with a 17-14 record.
Corey Brooks paced the Chargers with a team-high 24 points. Brent White and Garrison Baker were also in double figures with 11 and 10 points, respectively.
Wrangler softball team picks up three victories during tournament play
West Mesquite rolled past Samuell in a 20-0 victory last Friday. Danielle Thorton did not allow a hit in picking up the victory on the mound, while Brittni Estilow and Whitney Black had extra-base hits as part of a 10-hit attack to spark the offense.
On Saturday, West Mesquite picked up two more victories in the Gold Division. The Wranglers took advantage of eight Bryan Adams errors to post an 18-0 victory. West Mesquite also shut out W.T. White in a 6-0 win.
The Wranglers then advanced to the quarterfinals where they fell to Sachse in a 10-2 loss.
West Mesquite is 3-2 and will play at Lake Worth on Thursday.
After winning a pair of games at the Duncanville Tournament, North Mesquite dropped to 2-3 on Tuesday in a 2-0 loss to McKinney North. The Stallions were limited to four hits by McKinney North’s Kristen Adkins.
The Bulldogs scratched across an unearned run in the third inning and then got a home run by Amanda Parsonage to put the finishing touches on the win.
Over the weekend, North Mesquite defeated state-ranked Keller, 2-0, and then shut out Carrollton R.L. Turner, 11-0. The Stallions also fell short in a 4-1 loss to Arlington.
North Mesquite will play Kennendale on Friday at the Mesquite Girls Softball Complex.
Poteet is 1-1, losing to Waxahachie, 8-1, on Tuesday. The Pirates’ Lindsey Barsoum is off a hot start this season.
Barsoum had a big hit to jumpstart the rally in Poteet’s 2-1 victory over defending state champion Garland last Tuesday. She followed that up with a 4-for-4 effort in a losing effort on Tuesday.
Poteet will try to get back on the winning track starting today in the Burleson/Crowley Classic.
Mesquite is 1-0 after defeating Forney 3-2 on Feb. 13 and will begin play at Allen Tournament starting today.
Horn fell to 0-s after losing to Coppell, 5-3, on Tuesday. Amanda Thomas and Taylor Bratcher had extra-base hits, but it was not enough. The Jaguars will join Mesquite today in the Allen Tournament.
Poteet, West Mesquite open 2007 baseball season with victories.
It was a good start for the Mesquite ISD 10-4A teams, as both Poteet and West Mesquite opened the season with victories.
Poteet won its season opener on Tuesday, cruising to an 11-0 victory over Little Elm. The Pirates’ Teddy Nowell picked up the victory on the mound, as Little Elm managed just four hits.
Bryce Cummings, Tyler Dowse, J.T. Files, Brett Doe and Teddy Nowell all had extra-base hits as part of a 12-hit attack to pace the offense.
Poteet will try to continue to build early momentum when it begins play at the Granbury Tournament starting today.
West Mesquite opened the season with a 13-3 victory over Woodrow Wilson on Tuesday. The Wranglers pounded out nine hits and took advantage of four Woodrow errors in the win.
Manuel Azcona picked up the victory on the mound for West Mesquite, and his cause was helped by the offense, which got doubles from Jacob Albright, Justin Tyra, Eddie Villanueva, Aaron Looney, Jesse Demar and Bryan Dixon.
The Wranglers will take on Horn on Saturday, as the Jaguars try to bounce back from a 5-3 loss to Lakeview in its season opener. Horn’s Michael McCoy had a double, which was one of seven hits, but it was not enough.
Both North Mesquite and Mesquite will play their first games this week. The Stallions will take part in the Lake Cities Tournament starting today. The Skeeters will play at W.T. White on Saturday at 1 p.m.
Eastfield basketball getting things together
Eastfield might be playing its best basketball at just the right time. The Harvesters won a pair of games this past week to run their winning streak to three games heading into Wednesday’s regular season finale against Richland in a game completed after The Mesquite News’ press time.
Eastfield cruised past Lamar State College in a 75-49 victory last Wednesday and then took care of Mountain View in an 84-72 win on Saturday.
The Harvesters improved to 16-12 overall and 5-6 in Metro Athletic Conference Play. After wrapping up the regular season, the MAC Tournament is scheduled to held next Wednesday-Friday.
