PBR-sanctioned bull riding debuts at Mesquite Rodeo
By Staff Reports
After months of planning, the Mesquite Championship Rodeo launches bull riding competition sanctioned by the Professional Bull Riders (PBR) on Friday, June 13.
Bull riding will be part of the PBR’s Discovery Tour and will be a regular feature during each rodeo through the final performance on Sept. 27.
There are no increases in admission prices for the new feature.
“We’ve been proud to be affiliated with the PRCA,” said Mark Miller, general manager of Resistol Arena. “We see our PBR affiliation as an important step in maintaining the rodeo’s reputation as one of the best western venues in the country.”
Jim Gay of Rafter G Rodeo Co., supplier of livestock for the rodeo, added, “This decision was made to meet the challenges of a changing landscape. This is the best of both worlds. It’s still the Mesquite Championship Rodeo, but we’ve got the added excitement of the PBR and some of the best bull riders and bucking bulls in the country.”
The PBR was founded in 1992 and is headquartered in Pueblo, Colo. Its 1,200 plus members compete in more than 300 events in the United States, Australia, Brazil, Canada and Mexico.
Other competitive events at the Mesquite Rodeo are bronc riding, team roping and cowgirls’ barrel racing sanctioned by the Women’s Professional Rodeo Association (WPRA).
The action still includes the popular cowboys’ poker event, chuck wagon races and the mutton bustin’ and calf scramble events for youngsters.
Bull riding on Friday includes Pistol Robison of Burleson, ranked 29th in the PBR’s Built Ford Tough Series standings, with $36,603 in winnings. He has drawn a 1,800 lb bucking bull known as Tae Bo.
In other action on Friday, team roping features Chance Kelton (header) of Mayer, Ariz., paired with Boogie Ray of Mabank. Both are ranked 14th in the country, with Kelton winning $22,396, and Ray with $22,158. Cowgirls’ barrel racing spotlights Laurie Jones of Stephenville, ranked third locally with $2,801.
Saturday’s team roping pairs Terrell cowboys Clayton Hass (header), Mesquite’s defending all-around champion, and defending heeler champ J.W. Cotton of Elmo. Defending titleholder Rivon Nilson of Grand Prairie takes center stage in Saturday’s cowgirls’ barrel racing.
Mesquite Championship Rodeo action is held each Friday and Saturday, 8-10 p.m. Rodeo tickets are $7-$30. Doors open at 6:30 p.m. for pony rides, petting zoo, Wild Bill’s Rodeo Shoppe and a home-style BBQ buffet in the Sonny Bryan’s Pavilion ($10.95 adults, $7 youngsters).
Resistol Arena is air-conditioned and located on I-635 at Military Pkwy, only 15 minutes southeast of downtown Dallas.
