Beginning in October, the Florence Ranch Homestead and Opal Lawrence Historical Park, both of which make up the Mesquite Historical Museum System, will start a five-month long project known as Quilt Mania 2. Each institution will be open as part of a multi-institution collaborative celebration of the quilting legacy.

Both houses will include at least 10 different quilt pieces which illustrate pioneer life on early Texas farms. To offer the heritage and quilting tourist enough open hours, Historic Mesquite, Inc. (HMI) is recruiting volunteers for this special event.

Volunteers must be at least 16 years old and can supply transportation to and from the parks. The parks will host two training sessions Sept. 3, at 3 p.m. at Florence Ranch Homestead, and Sept. 11, at 6:30 p.m. at Opal Lawrence Historical Park. Potential volunteers will be asked to sign special event releases and to choose shifts. When calling to volunteer, please request either day training or night hours.

To volunteer, contact Jami Russell, City of Mesquite Volunteer Services Coordinator, at (972) 329-8331, or the HMI office at (972) 216-6468.

The Florence Ranch Homestead, 1424 Barnes Bridge Road, will be open from noon to 4 p.m., Tuesday- Friday, and 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Saturdays beginning Oct. 11. Opal Lawrence Historical Park, 701 E. Kearney St., will be open from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays beginning Oct. 11.

Both parks will close the Quilt Mania exhibits Dec. 13- Jan. 10 for the holidays. Florence Ranch’s last Quilt Mania day will be March 20, when it will resume regular tour dates and times. March 21 will be Opal Lawrence’s last Quilt Mania day.
