The Mesquite Independent School District provides free and reduced-priced breakfast and lunch for students from families who qualify based on federal government guidelines. The meals served each school day are offered through the National School Breakfast Program and National School Lunch Program.

Parents may apply now for the meal benefit at the Food and Nutrition Services office located in the MISD Service Center at 800 E. Kearney, between 8:00 a.m. and 4:30 p.m., Monday through Friday.

Each student will be giving an application during the first week of school. Parents may complete the form for their family and return it to school. Correctly completed applications will take up to 10 days to process. Parents will need to provide lunch money or a sack lunch until they receive a notification letter stating the eligibility change.

Texas Health and Human Services Commission (HHSC) will give the Food and Nutrition Service office a list of MISD students listed on their family’s food stamp or TANF case. The Food and Nutrition office will automatically add those students to the meal program without an application. A letter will be mailed before school to the family at the address from the district's computer system notifying families their student that have been automatically added to the meal program.

Returning students who were on the meal program at the end of 2007-2008, will have their benefits carry over for 30 days through Oct. 8 or until a new application is processed. If no new application is processed, the benefit will end on Oct. 9.

Applications are accepted throughout the school year. Parents can re-apply anytime there is an increase in household size or decrease in income. Applications are strictly confidential and are used only for the purpose of determining eligibility for the meal program.

For more information on the free or reduced-price program, contact the Food and Nutrition Services Department at 972-882-5512.
