Mesquite: Cell phone ban signs going up Monday
BRIAN BEARDEN/Managing Editor
Look for signs in school zones across Mesquite starting Monday that warn drivers against using cell phones in school zones.
Signs are being put up at 40 schools by Friday.
Greg Sowell, communications manager for the city, said parents have asked if they can use cell phones if they are waiting on their children in the school parking lot.
"It does not apply to the school ground. Only the street," said Sowell, adding that drivers can use hands-free speaker phones or headsets.
The law was put in to increase driver awareness and safety for the students and school employees. Rowlett, Dallas, Highland Park and University Park also have school zone bans. Mesquite's law went into effect Oct. 1, awaiting the signs.
Sowell said all signs are expected to be in place by Friday.
