Sleet, ice create havoc in Little Elm
By Penny Rathbun, Staff writer
Sleet, cold temperatures, and a two-hour delay to the start of the school day gave Little Elm traffic officers a busy morning.
“It was bad,” said Little Elm police officer Brad Wilcox. “The late start to school threw everybody off.”
Three multi-vehicle crashes along U.S. Highway 380 snarled traffic. “Between 9:30 and 2 today it was absolutely a disaster,” Wilcox said.
Wilcox urged drivers to take plenty of precautions when driving in precarious road conditions.
“Slow down. Slow down. Keep plenty of distance between you and the next person. Watch out for the other guy. First and foremost, stay at home if you can. If you don’t have to go anywhere, don’t go anywhere. That’s the best tip of them all.”
Julie Zwahr, Little Elm ISD director of communications and partnerships, reported that all the buses made it to school safely this morning.
“The two-hour delay allowed people more time to travel here more slowly and safely. The streets were dry and clear,” Zwahr said.
The district will not have to make up the two-hour delay in starting the school day, she added.
Oak Point traffic officers had an easier time this morning. No accidents were reported in the Oak Point area last night or this morning. Oak Point DPS Sgt. Brian Howard noted that the department did not receive any calls about cars in ditches.
Due to the potential for inclement weather this evening Dec. 16, all but two events at LEHS are cancelled.
The two exceptions are the LEHS Girls Varsity Basketball game in Lake Dallas and it was moved up to 4:30 p.m. in Lake Dallas. The LEHS Band Concert will begin at 7 p.m.
Events at Hackberry, Lakeview and Powell are cancelled. Please check with your student’s campus later for a possible rescheduled time for games or concerts.
