Mesquite Police responded to a shooting in the 4700 block of U.S. 80 at 3:17 a.m. Sunday after a report of a shooting on the highway. When they arrived, they found a white Chevrolet van in the eastbound lanes where it had crashed into the center barrier. The 21 year-old male driver had been shot at least one time, and was transported to Baylor Hospital of Dallas in critical condition. The two other occupants suffered minor injuries because of the collision with the barrier. Police are not releasing the names of the victim and witnesses at this time.
The preliminary investigation indicates that the occupants of the van were involved in some type of confrontation near Jim Miller and I-30 in Dallas with unknown suspects in a large, dark-colored sedan. The sedan is described as possibly a Chevrolet Caprice or Ford Crown Victoria.
The occupants of the suspect vehicle began firing at the van as both vehicles traveled eastbound towards the I-30 / U.S. 80 interchange. The suspects continued firing as the van entered the City of Mesquite. The van then crashed into the center barrier across from the Big Town Exhibition Hall.
Mesquite Police are asking that anyone who may have witnessed the shooting or have other information about this case, please call (972)285-6336.
