MISD students succeed on all levels
By Robert Seward, President Mesquite ISD Board of Trustees
The school year isn’t even half over; yet already, there are great examples of excellence taking place in Mesquite ISD.
When the state’s most recent accountability ratings were released in August, Mesquite ISD realized a 25 percent increase in its total number of Recognized and Exemplary campuses over last year.
Now, more than half of Mesquite ISD campuses are rated Recognized or Exemplary. In addition, campuses earned a total of 123 Gold Performance Acknowledgements (GPAs) in 2008, and the district achieved commended performance in reading.
It is Mesquite ISD’s goal to achieve a Recognized rating for the district n no easy task for a district of our size. Yet going forward, that goal is clearly within reach.
The district’s quest for excellence doesn’t stop at academic accountability. It extends to all areas of education. For example, extracurricular activities provide an additional learning opportunity through which students can achieve success and reach their potential. Week after week throughout the school year, there are outstanding achievements from each campus, such as the recent performances of our high school bands in UIL marching contest in which they all received first division ratings.
Achievements like these provide a tremendous sense of accomplishment and pride for students who dedicate their time and efforts to these endeavors. Each month, Board members are privileged to recognize countless students for their accomplishments, and the level of achievement is staggering.
One aspect that truly sets Mesquite ISD apart is its focus on preparation for education beyond high school. The district began implementing its unique FutureQuest program three years ago, and now, the impact is being seen. In September, 3,000 students and parents attended College Night n a new record! The fact that so many families are looking toward post-high school educational options shows that Mesquite ISD is preparing its students for the brightest futures.
It is not possible to list every example of excellence in an article of this type, but the community can be extremely confident in the quality of education its children are receiving. Mesquite ISD’s Board members are very proud of our students, their accomplishments, and their continuing successes.
As the district pursues its vision of success for all students, the remainder of the school year will surely be filled with many student achievements that will bring continued honor to our community and support for our public schools.

" MISD might've gained "academic success" but it has lost the "personal touch" it once had. MISD, from my perspective, has catered to state testing while ignoring many other lessons that would've more than likely come in handy. "
