Mesquite gets festive
By Kenny Green, kgreen@acnpapers.com
The city of Mesquite will soon be alive with the Christmas spirit as its annual holiday activities are set to begin.
The holiday season officially gets underway with Old Town Mesquite’s annual Christmas on the Square tree-lighting ceremony. This year the ceremony takes place Monday from 6-8 p.m. Mesquite Mayor John Monaco is scheduled to perform the tree lighting.
“The square is the heart of the city,” said Jennifer Vidler, president of Old Town Mesquite Inc. “This event sets off the Christmas season,”
“We host this event as a thank you and to show appreciation to the city and the citizens,” Vidler said.
The 24th Annual Christmas in the Park Celebration will take place Dec. 2-4 at Westlake Park on Gross Road.
The event kicks off Dec. 2 at 6 p.m. with the arrival of Santa Claus and the lighting of the park. Dec. 3 and Dec. 4 activities include crafts, games, live music, food, a holiday story, a place to write letters to the North Pole and photos with Santa.
The event is mostly free, but some activities will require a small fee.
Among the activities that will require a fee include a Rockin’ Rudolph ride. The ride is similar to a mechanical bull ride but with a reindeer. Another paid activity is one the Parks and Recreation Department is calling “Giant Christmas Balls.” The balls allow an individual to get inside a giant hamster ball and roll down the hill. The city will also have a paintball area set up where customers can take aim at the Grinch.
The city will have several food vendors selling their products at the event as well.
“Christmas in the Park is one of Mesquite’s longest-standing traditions,” said Cliff Keheley, parks director. “It is a great opportunity for residents of all ages to celebrate the holiday season. Mesquite Parks and Recreation staff members put a great deal of effort into making this event a success and it wouldn’t be possible without their desire to make it the best that it can be year after year.”
Parking at the event is limited, but a shuttle will run non-stop from the parking lot behind Martinez Restaurant on Gross Road.
