Gymnastics gem leads locals to title

The years may have changed, but the results have not as Kurt Thomas Gymnastics is the home of the Level 7 state champions for a second straight season.
The 14-girl squad, which includes Plano residents Darby Angle and Jessica Robertson, earned a team score of 193.4 at the state meet and also brought home 11 individual titles to supplement their state crown.
Sydnee Houston’s team-high mark of 38.775 netted an all-around title for the Junior B3 division, where she also won the state balance beam championship with a score of 9.85. In addition to those golds, Houston picked up silver medals on the vault and floor exercise as well as a bronze on the bars.
Lowry captured her gold medals in the all-around and bars with respective scores of 38.125 and 9.725. She also managed a 9.675 on floor to earn a silver medal.
The state championships continued in several different groups.
Kelly Kiernan, in the Senior B2 division, won the state bars title with a 9.725 while also finishing second in the all-around with a silver-medal performance on the vault and bronze-medal performance on the beam. Hannah Bowerman, competing in the Junior C2 division, can call herself a state champion as well after winning the vault with a score of 9.6. Bowerman also brought home silver medals on beam and for the all-around.
Rounding out the state champions was Angle.
The Plano resident, taking part in the Senior A1 division, earned her state title on the floor exercise after putting up a score of 9.825.
Other individual medalists for the state meet from Kurt Thomas Gymnastics included: Riley Harrison (second in Junior A1 vault); Taylor Tuite (second in Senior B2 beam); Mackenzie Clasen (third in Junior C1 bars); and Planoite Robertson (third in Senior A3 beam).
