Chance to learn something this summer

Mesquite ISD Community Education is offering parents an opportunity to give their kids some summer fun with educational value.

"The classes are something for kids to do during the summer. A lot of times, parents want something fun yet educational at the same time. It really benefits the community as a whole," said Marybeth Mank, MISD community education marketing specialist. "These camps are outlets for children to explore their creativity and use their imaginations."

For kids who want to explore their creative and dramatic side, community education is offering six different camps -- Adventures in Art, Drama Kids - LIGHTS! CAMERA! ACTION!, Lego Mania, Lego Logo, Fairy Princess Camp and Fashion Design Camp.

There are two different Adventures in Art sessions being offered. Would-be artists will create eight different artworks in different mediums over four days, Mank said. All projects will be different for each session.

"We have been doing this camp for at least 12 years. Every year it gets more and more successful," Mank said.

She added that among the mediums used during the class will be oil pastels, which isn't usually offered in a class of this type.

The first class session begins on June 20 at Florence Black Elementary, 328 E. Newsome Road, and the second session begins July 18 at Rugel Elementary, 2701 Sybil Drive. The class is open to all students who have completed grades 1-6. The cost for the class is $124 and includes supplies.

Aspiring thespians will get the chance to show off their chops during the Drama Kids -- Lights! Camera! Action! Drama Camp. The four-day camp is open to students in grades 8-12. The camp begins July 11 at Rugel Elementary. The cost to attend the camp is $124.

During the camp, children will explore their imaginations with Drama Kids International through a series of exercises and fun activities.

"They will become improved speech-givers. This camp gives the children self-confidence," Mank said.

The camp will feature a performance by campers for their friends and family on the last camp day.

Future engineers will have fun in Lego Mania and Lego Logo camps this summer. They will get to use Lego kits created specifically for the camps and not available in any store. Some of the kits feature battery-operated accessories, according to Mank.

"They will develop better hand-eye coordination and a little bit of engineering. They will have to think creatively," Mank said. "It is so interesting to see the glee on these kids' faces when they figure how they work. It is all about letting kids have a blast. It's nice to see."

Lego Mania is open to children 5 to 8 years old. Lego Mania is scheduled to begin June 27 at Florence Black Elementary. The cost to attend is $89.

Lego Logo is open to children 8 to 13 years old. Lego Logo is scheduled to begin June 27 at Florence Black Elementary. There are two time slots available and the cost to attend is $89.

Young girls will have the opportunity to be girly during the Fairy Princess Camp and Fashion Design Camp while exploring the worlds of Barbie and fashion. Both classes will feature games and crafts to spark creativity.

Fairy Princess Camp is designed for the younger girls, ages 5 to 8.

"They will get together in groups and do certain things like Barbies and story time. They will also draw pictures and have tea parties," Mank said.

Fairy Princess Camp will begin on June 27 at Florence Black Elementary. The cost to attend is $89.

Fashion Design Camp is for the older girls, 8 to 13 years of age.

"The children will create things out of fabric, and by the end of the week, they will have a portfolio of designs," Mank said.

At the end of the camp, the children will host a fashion show for their friends and family.

The camp is scheduled to begin June 27 at Florence Black Elementary. The cost to attend is $89.

There are also classes offered to give students an edge to perform better on tests: the TAKS/STAAR Summer Tutoring Camps. Each session is grade/age specific and includes tutoring in math, reading, writing and more. The instructor, Vicki Kennedy, will help each student improve their confidence and give them tips to perform better on tests.

"The camp makes the kids feel more comfortable about the test. Their confidence is built up because they practice skills on the test in a fun way," Mank said.

The TAKS/STAAR Summer Tutoring Camps will take place at Rugel Elementary. The first camps will begin for students in grades 5 and 6 on July 11 and grades 2, 3 and 4 on Aug. 8. Each camp is scheduled for four days. The cost per attendee is $69.

One of the new camps this summer is a kindergarten-readiness camp, Jumpstart Kindergarten, programmed to get kids ready. Jumpstart Kindergarten offers a variety of fun activities designed specifically for kids ages 4 to 6.

The camp is scheduled to begin June 27 at Florence Black Elementary. The cost to attend is $89.

MISD Community Education will also offer individual painting classes one Saturday a month for June, July and August, as well as a crochet class.

Enrollment for all camps is limited, so early sign-up is recommended. To get specific information about each camp or to enroll, call MISD Community Education at 972-88-CLASS or visit www.communityedclasses.org.
