UNT, community to honor veterans with November events

Published: Tuesday, November 8, 2011 2:41 PM CST
The University of North Texas will present a series of events in celebration of Veterans Day, including a career fair for student veterans, 5K charity run and collection drive for care package items. UNT will also join Texas Woman's University and the city of Denton to host a citywide Veterans Day event to honor veterans. The celebration will be held 10 a.m.to 1:30 p.m. Friday on the lawn of Denton's Courthouse on the Square. The service will begin at 11 a.m.

UNT President Dr. V. Lane Rawlins will deliver remarks, and Maj. Gen. Mary L. Saunders, director of the Leadership Institute at Texas Woman's University, will be the guest speaker. Saunders was the first female general officer selected as the director of transportation in the U.S. Air Force. Saunders is a native Texan, born in Nacogdoches and educated in Houston. She earned her bachelor's degree in social work from Texas Woman's University and her master's degree in guidance and counseling from Rider University in New Jersey. Prior to her retirement from the Air Force in 2005, Saunders was vice director at the Defense Logistics Agency in Fort Belvoir, Va.

In conjunction with Veterans Day, the UNT Veterans Center will be collecting donated goods through Friday to send in care packages for active military. The pilot campaign, called Operation Soaring Eagle, will further advance UNT's veteran-friendly mission by fostering international relationships with active military. Donations can dropped off at the UNT Veterans Center in University Union room 320. Suggested items include chapstick, beef jerky, phone cards and packaged snacks. The care packages will be shipped during the holidays.

In addition, UNT and the Arnold Air Society will host the 2nd Annual DFW Trot for the Troops 5K Run on Saturday at 9 a.m. at Fouts Field. Proceeds will benefit Fisher House, a charity which provides lodging for military families to be close to a loved one during hospitalization for an illness, disease or injury. The Arnold Air Society is a student organization associated with Air Force ROTC at UNT that is dedicated to producing quality leaders for the U.S. Air Force through professionalism, honor and service to the community. Register online at http://www.dfwtrotforthetroops.com/ for $22 through Nov. 8 or at the field for $30 on Saturday.
