Filing for primary begins

Published: Tuesday, November 29, 2011 7:18 PM CST
Nine Republicans on Monday filed as candidates for the 2012 Republican primary.

A few precinct chairmen were the only ones to file with the Democratic Party of Collin County on the first day. Shawn Stevens, county Democratic Party chairman, said more candidates are expected to file soon.

He said Jack Ternan has announced he will run as a Democratic candidate in the primary in hopes of being elected in December to replace state Sen. Florence Shapiro, a Republican who is not seeking re-election. Stevens said Ternan and other Democratic candidates are expected to file before the 6 p.m. Dec. 15 deadline.

Republican candidates John Pitchford, Roger Burns and Jeff Leach filed for the Texas House of Representatives District 67 seat to replace Rep. Jerry Madden, who will not seek re-election.

Bracy Wilson filed as a candidate for the Texas House District 70 seat to replace Rep. Ken Paxton, who reportedly plans to run for a seat in the Texas Senate.

Rep. Jodie Laubenberg, incumbent in Texas House District 89, filed as a candidate for re-election, as did Judge Mark Rusch of the 401st District Court.

Chris Hill filed as a candidate for Precinct 3 county commissioner to replace Joe Jaynes, who is retiring from the position.

Cesare Venegoni filed as a candidate for the Precinct 4 constable seat to replace Johnny Todd, who plans to retire at the end of next year. Chuck Ruckel filed as a candidate for Precinct 3-1 Justice of the Peace to replace Johnny Lewis, who is also retiring at the end of next year.

Tim McCord, executive director of the Collin County Republican Party, said other potential candidates have called or come by the office to discuss the possibility of running but have not yet filed. Several incumbents are expected to file for re-election.

Filing continues through Dec. 15 at the Collin County Republican Party office, located at 8416 Stacy Road, Suite 100, in McKinney. Office hours are 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. weekdays except on Dec. 15, when the office will remain open until 6 p.m.

Filing continues on the same dates, from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., at the Democratic Party of Collin County office, located at 2504 K Avenue, Suite 200 in Plano.

McCord noted that candidates who serve multiple counties must file with the state in Austin rather than with a county office.

Stevens said a complete list of candidates who have filed for multi-county seats will be available from the Texas Secretary of State's office Dec. 16.

Applications for candidates who wish to run for office are available at www.sos.state.tx.us.

" Someone needs to run against PCT. 4 Constable. He is about the most unethical person for the county...very scary. I remember him as chief in Celina, and he was the worst! This would be a detriment for the county. Hopefully someone runs against him. "

" I have known the man for a very very very long time and I have to disagree. We worked together and he is actually the most ethical person I have ever come across in this county. He has done a great deal of service not only for Celina but as well as the county. He will have my vote. "
