Band to host Christmas concert

Published: Thursday, December 1, 2011 11:23 PM CST
The Christmas holidays are a time for families to spend time together and enjoy the pageantry that the season brings to the area. Part of the pageantry includes music unique to the Christmas season.

The Mesquite Symphonic Band and the Rockwall Children’s Chorus will team up to provide area residents an opportunity to experience a dose of holiday music. The two groups will host a concert at 7 p.m. on Saturday, Dec. 10 at the Mesquite Arts Center, 1527 N. Galloway. Tickets for the performance are $10 and will be available at the door the evening of the concert. Children ages 6 and under are free.

“We are a performing arts group and have had a holiday concert at the arts center every year since it opened,” said Elizabeth Massey, Mesquite Symphonic Band publicity manager. “The [holiday concert] is one of our most well attended and enjoyed performance of the year.”

The Mesquite Symphonic Band is under the direction of Dale Y. Coates and the Rockwall Children’s Chorus is under the direction of Alan Clark. The band is made up of volunteer musicians from all over the area. They range in age from high school to senior citizen. The Rockwall Children's Chorus is a nonprofit organization dedicated to the education and performance of youth singers.

“Our director is very involved in the performing arts community. As a result of his involvement he has been able to reach out to different performing arts groups each year,” Massey said.

The concert is entitled “Sounds of the Season”, and will include holiday arrangements that the group hopes will fill attendees with the spirit of the holidays. Part of the music included in the program will be “Symphonic Prelude on Adeste Fideles” by Claude Smith, “A Festive Christmas”, by Kenny Bierschenk, “March of the Toys” by Victor Herbert, “A Christmas Carol Festival” arranged by Jack Bullock, “Stille, Stille, Stille” arranged by James Curnow, and “Sleigh Ride” by Leroy Anderson.

“We try and mix it up with a little bit of everything. We will have contemporary and classical pieces. We try and have a variety so there will be something everyone will enjoy,” Massey said. “Those that attend can expect a full Christmas event. They will walk away being filled with the sounds of the season.”

The band also invites all attendees to a reception immediately following the concert to enjoy refreshments and allow the members the opportunity to thank their patrons and guests.

“We began having a reception several years ago. We enjoy having our audience come back and join us. It gives us a chance to say thank you,” Massey said.

The concert is sponsored in part by the Mesquite Arts Council and the Texas Commission on the Arts. For information about the concert call 972-216-8125 or visit www.MesquiteSymphonicBand.com.
