Sister-in-laws Laura Rohman and Julie Albright of Frisco celebrated Mother's Day a little early on Tuesday, as the two treated themselves to vital information for living a healthier life at Texas Health Presbyterian Hospital Plano.

"Well, we're getting a little older, so it's nice to learn a little bit about our health as we get older," said Albright, 46.

The hospital invited women of all ages to mingle at its free health fair and seminar. Hospital employees provided information and screenings on stroke, diabetes, heart disease, stress and depression, nutrition, cancer, emergency preparedness, bone density and aromatherapy.

The event is part of the monthly Women's Health Connection series. Visitors were pampered with hand and foot massages while having an opportunity to ask physicians and hospital staff members questions pertaining to their personal health and how they can increase their overall well being.

"Too often women make time for all the tasks in their lives at the expense of their own health and well being," said Mary Jo Dean, director of community relations for Texas Health Plano, in a release. "We look forward to an evening of fun and time for women to gather crucial information about their health."

Dr. Janna Massar, a physician on the medical staff at Texas Health Plano, spoke about "What's on the Shelf and Your Health," addressing the most common vitamins and herbal supplements women use and why it's important to tell one's physician about all the medications, vitamins and supplements one is taking.

Lily Wang, of Plano, said she was collecting as much reading material as she could at Tuesday's health fair. She and takes advantage of these types of seminars because they have enhanced her awareness when it comes to being heart healthy, something that, in the past, was not emphasized as much for females.

"It's very, very informative, for my age and heart, cholesterol, stroke, and all that," Wang said. "I think it's so important to take care of myself instead of waiting until I get sick. Prevention always has a cure."

The fair was the first in a series of events Texas Health will offer in collaboration with the Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center Laura W. Bush Institute for Women's Health. The collaboration is intended to help provide women tools and evidence-based research to make educated decisions concerning their health, as well as the health of their loved ones.

"Texas Health Plano is committed to improving the health of the people in the communities we serve, and one way we do that is by helping to educate individuals about the best ways they can take control of their own health," said Dr. Jeffrey Canose, hospital president, in a release. "This collaboration is another tool for Texas Health Plano to meet people in the community and offer them tools to improve their health.
