Excitement will be at found at the library all summer

Published: Thursday, June 14, 2012 11:22 AM CDT
The Mesquite Public Library annual offers its summer reading club as a way to expose children to the world of reading by using rewards and other forms of entertainment to peak their interests.

“The main purpose is to keep the kids reading skills up to the level they are at when they are in school. This keeps them from falling behind when they go back to school,” said Chris Thomson, children’s librarian at the Mesquite Public Library Main Branch.

This year the summer reading club has a Get a Clue theme. The library will offer various rewards and certificates for each milestone that a child achieves while reading over the course of the summer.

“We try and keep out current children’s books that will get the children’s attention and draw kids into the library,” Thomson said. “We also have booklets available that show books on each grade level to help parents find appropriate books for their child.”

To participate in the reading club, each child needs to come by the library and pick up a time sheet to record the books they read.

“They chose how they want to do it. They can count the number of books they read or the number of hours they spend reading. When they reach 12 books or four hours they earn a certificate. When they ready six additional books or an additional two hours they get a gold sticker on their certificate,” Thomson said.

Thompson said the library also has a drawing that each child gets entered into when they check out 10 books.

“There are several prizes that we will give away that were donated by local merchants,” Thomson said. “In addition to that we also have a toy chest that they can choose something from when they turn in a completed time sheet.”

She said there is a limit of eight time sheets per child to visit the toy chest to ensure everyone has an opportunity to make a selection.

To keep the children interested in reading, the library also mixes in various forms of entertainment including movies and several special guests such as clowns and animals.

“Most of our special guests are chosen from years of experience and we have worked with them before or been given feedback by other libraries,” Thomson said.

The summer reading club will conclude this year with a party on Friday, Aug. 3 celebrating the achievements of each young reader. During the party awards and certificates will be distributed to each child.
