Shore-side party on the Fourth

Published: Tuesday, June 26, 2012 1:41 PM CDT
As patriotic as any community in North Texas, The Colony has celebrated each Fourth of July for the past 15 years with a variety of activities. None more memorable than the annual fireworks show.

The finale to this year's Liberty by the Lake festival is scheduled for 9:30 p.m. July 4, capping off a day's worth of events at Stewart Creek Park -- events that get off to a running start at 6:30 a.m. with the Liberty 5K, 10K, and 1-Mile Fun Run.

The 5K course begins and ends at the park, 3700 Sparks Road, with a loop around the Stewart Peninsula Subdivision in between. The 10K course offers runners the chance to soak up the view from the city's Shoreline Trail along Lewisville Lake.

This year's Independence Day Parade at 10 a.m. celebrates not only the Fourth of July but also the city's 35th Anniversary, themed, "Community Spirit, Patriotic Pride." Organizers are asking participants to dress in reference The Colony's events and moments in history. Awards will be given Most Creative Float, Best Non-Float Entry and Outstanding Marching Group.

The parade lineup will be held at 9:15 a.m. at Peter's Colony Elementary School, 5101 Nash Drive. The route will proceed west on Nash to Blair Oaks Drive, then south on Blair Oaks to the Five Star Sports Complex.

At the same time Stewart Creek Park opens to festival-goers at 11 a.m., the Empire Wake Wakeboarding competition begins. But most of the day's remaining activities kick off at 4 p.m., such as the Family Fun Zone and a business expo. The food stalls also will open at 4 p.m.

Immediately taking the stage will be a host of Elvis impersonators competing in a regional event and for a berth in the 2013 Elvis National Competition. Headlining Liberty by the Lake is cover band Live 80 at 7 p.m.

Sure to attract an audience later in the evening will be a new event in 2012, a watermelon-eating contest, open to ages 5 and up, which requires hands-free eating and total consumption of the melon in the least amount of time without spitting it out or losing your stomach.

The first of four high-flying stunt shows performed by Overground Skateboarding and BMX starts at 4:30 p.m. Other LBTL events include a homemade salsa contest featuring People's Choice judging from 5 to 6 p.m. Official salsa judging follows, and will be based on taste, texture and aroma.
