RoughRiders avoid sweep
After dropping the first three games of a four-game set against Corpus Christi, the RoughRiders avoided a four-game sweep Wednesday night with a 4-1 victory over the Hooks.
The win came after pitching prospect Neil Ramirez surrendered a first-inning run to Corpus Christi before settling into a rhythm.
Relievers Nicholas Tepesch, Tyler Tufts and Ryan Rodebaugh combined to pitch the final three innings of the game without giving up a run.
Meanwhile, the RoughRiders did their damage at the plate in the first and fourth innings.
The three-run fourth was the difference in the game with Chris McGuiness leading off the inning with a solo homer to right field. Jared Prince and Val Majewski each added RBI hits in the inning to put Frisco, the Double-A affiliate of the Texas Rangers, ahead by three runs.
That proved to be the difference in the game, as Frisco improved to 2-4 in their last six games and now sit three games back of first-place San Antonio in the Texas League South division.
Celebrity HR Derby coming to town
Each summer, a cluster of standout pro athletes and sports figures take to Dr Pepper Ballpark in Frisco for the Heroes Celebrity Baseball Game.
This year will be no different, with the game hosted by Dallas Mavericks standout Dirk Nowitzki. Before Dirk and Co. hit the diamond, the celebrities will duke it out in the Baylor Medical Center at Frisco Celebrity Home Run Derby.
The event is slated for tomorrow evening at 5 p.m., with the actual ballgame slated to follow at 6. The public is invited to participate as well, although those interested must have tried out by June 22 at HITS400 in Plano. Four hitters were selected to compete against the celebrities tomorrow.
Tickets for the game itself start at $7 with proceeds benefiting the Dirk Nowitzki Foundation and the Heroes Foundation.
Manning scholarship goes to Harrison
Former Centennial volleyball standout Macy Harrison has been named one of two recipients for the 2012 Peyton Manning Scholarship at the University of Tennessee.
Harrison joined Chris Barnes from Hardin Valley Academy in Knoxville to earn the prestigious honor. She will major in sociology or social work and plans a career in global public policy.
The Lady Volunteer was a four-year member of the volleyball team at Centennial and also volunteered with the Big Brother and Big Sisters organization as well as at a local animal shelter.
The scholarship program is in its 15th year and began in 1998 when a first-year student participating in the University’s Honors Program received the scholarship for the first time.
The Manning Scholarship, named for the Vols’ 1997 All-American quarterback, covers full tuition costs and is awarded based on criteria that includes academic achievement, leadership and community service.
Dunn selected for all-star game
After helping lead Wakeland to a regional semifinals berth, senior third baseman Darian Dunn will represent the Lady Wolverines in the Texas Girls Coaches Association all-star softball game.
The event will take place July 10 at the Workman Complex in Arlington and will feature the top seniors from around the state.
Dunn will be joined by multiple players from the Metroplex, including Ennis’ Ashley Deutsch, Plano East’s Holly Kern and Plano’s Kristen Miles.
The game will have a 7 p.m. first pitch.
