RoughRiders end skid

It took a late rally by the RoughRiders in Wednesday night’s game against San Antonio to avoid a four-game skid.

Frisco, the Double-A affiliate of the Texas Rangers, dropped the series finale against Corpus Christi Sunday before dropping the first two games of a four-game set against the Missions.

Things didn’t look much better for the RoughRiders at times in Wednesday’s contest either. San Antonio scored three runs in the top of the fifth inning to grab a 3-0 lead.

That’s when Frisco began to roll, scoring two runs in the home half of the fifth and adding a run in the seventh and eighth innings for a 4-3 victory.

The late offense allowed starter Jacob Brigham to leave with a no decision after tossing five innings and surrendering three runs on six hits and one walk.

After reliever Ryan Rodebaugh pitched two scoreless innings, Ross Wolf closed the game out with two scoreless frames of his own to earn his first win (1-1, 2.16) of the season.

Frisco’s offense was led by outfielder Engel Beltre, who finished 2-for-4 at the plate with a key triple in the fifth inning and a solo home run in the seventh.

The RoughRiders were looking for a series split Thursday night in a 7 p.m. contest. However, results were not available as of press time. Following the game, Frisco will begin a seven-game road trip with the first four against Corpus Christi.

Strikers win national title

The Metroplex-based United Strikers won the U16 boys title Sunday at the 2012 US Youth Soccer National Presidents Cup from the Cherry Island Soccer Complex in Sacramento.

The United Strikers beat LA Premier FC Black (California) in the finals, 3-2 (SO).

LA Premier took a 1-0 lead in the 8th minute and advanced that advantage to 2-0 just before halftime. The United Strikers leveled the match in a three-minute span with goals from Oscar Gudiel in the 61st minute and Alfredo Molina in the 64th minute.

The United Strikers converted all of its penalty kicks to claim the title, 3-2.

Texans fall in finals

While one Metroplex squad triumphed Sunday in Sacramento, another fell as the Dallas Texans 97 squad lost to GUSA Navy (North Carolina) in the U15 girls finals at the 2012 US Youth Soccer National Presidents Cup.

GUSA defeated the 97 Texans, 2-1 (OT).

The two teams had tied, 1-1, in pool play.

Sunday belonged to GUSA though, despite being down a player much of the match. The North Carolina squad took a 1-0 lead in the 47th minute before Connor MacKenzie leveled the match for the Texans three minutes later. In overtime, Allexis Taylor netted her fourth goal of the week to secure the 2-1 win and national title for GUSA.

State VB moving to Garland

The UIL Volleyball State Championships are moving to the Curtis Culwell Center in Garland.

The tournament had been at Strahan Coliseum in San Marcos since 2000.

“The Culwell Center is a first-class venue and we believe it will serve as a tremendous host,” said Dr. Mark Cousins, UIL athletic director. “We look forward to working closely with Garland ISD in creating a great experience for the schools, fans and students involved.”

The state tourney is set for Nov. 15-17.

“UIL championship events make memories that last a lifetime,” said Dr. Curtis Culwell, Garland ISD Superintendent. “Garland ISD is privileged to host this premiere championship event.”

Lovejoy has won four straight state volleyball titles.
