Lewisville officer, dispatcher honored


The Lewisville Police Department recently named officer Schnequa Guy as Officer of the First Quarter 2012 and dispatcher Cassie Race as Civilian of the First Quarter 2012. Both employees were recognized for their outstanding job performance.

Benefit golf tournament scheduled

Steve Carter, Arlington resident and Grand Prairie business owner, lost his yearlong battle with stomach cancer last month. Carter, a native of Minnesota, thoroughly embraced Texas as his adopted home state, put down his roots in Arlington and developed a courier business serving the entire metroplex. To honor his memory and to help with medical bills left after his illness, family, friends and business associates are sponsoring a golf tournament Saturday, Aug. 4. The Steve Carter Benefit Golf Tournament will be held at the Bridlewood Golf Club, 4000 W. Windsor Dr. in Flower Mound. Registration begins at noon. The driving range will be open and a putting contest held before the 2 p.m. shotgun start to the tournament. Dinner will be at 6:30 p.m. at the club. The day's activities include prizes, drawings and recognition for winners. A live and silent auction will be held during dinner and includes collectibles, lifestyle and business gifts.

Several levels of sponsorship are available and individual golfers are welcome.

Lewisville library's summer specials continue

Lewisville Public Library summer grade school special is held at 7 p.m. on Mondays. During the summer months, the library hosts Reading Detectives Specials for grades kindergarten through fifth.

Lewisville Public Library summer preschool specials are held at 11:30 a.m. on Fridays. Join the fun with the Clue Finders for ages 3 through 6.

The Dragon Readers Book Club is for all children going into grades fourth and fifth.

Teen role playing sessions are held on Monday nights. All role playing sessions are from 6 to 8:30 p.m. in Teen Point (second floor of the library). Teens ages 12-18 are welcome.

Summer teen Thursday night specials are held weekly at 6:30 p.m. Space is limited. To sign up, call or visit the youth services desk.

NCTC offers free computer class

North Central Texas College is offering a free basic computer class at the Flower Mound campus. "Welcome to the World of Computers" gives novices the opportunity to learn internet browsing, how to set up and check e-mails and how to use their machines to compose and print correspondence. The class meets Mondays and Wednesdays, now through July 30, from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m.

Grief recovery workshop set

Ann's Haven VNA is offering a free one-day grief recovery workshop called "Good Grief" for adults who have experienced the loss of a loved one.

The workshop will be held from 9 to 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, July 31 at the Ann's Haven VNA office, 325 West McKinney St. suite 101 in Denton.

Information and support will be provided on topics that include common grief experiences, coping with grief, myths about grief and resources for help.

There is no cost to attend the "Good Grief" workshop, but reservations are required. To register, call Molly Harrison, Ann's Haven VNA bereavement coordinator at 940-349-5900.

Spanish classes continue

Fun with Spanish classes will be held at the Lewisville Public Library Mondays through Fridays, now through Aug. 3.

The classes are for boys and girls aged 10-14 with the first class from 1:30 to 2:50 p.m. and repeating at 3 to 4:20 pm. The free classes will be led by exchange teachers from Mexico and sponsored by the local rotary clubs.

Visual Art League

The Visual Art League of Lewisville will host its annual Fresh Ideas 2012 show at the MCL Grand Theatre at 100 N. Charles Street in Lewisville. The show runs from 7-9 p.m. through Aug. 11. This show was judged by Bill Barber of the Premier Gallery in Flower Mound.

Exhibiting at Tierney's Café & Tavern through Aug. 26 is Valerie Corwin, Dan Lattimore and Joyce Tremethick. Tierney's Café & Tavern is located at 208 E. Main St.

Exhibiting at the Lewisville State Bank during the month of July is Dulce Ruque. The banks' lobby hours are 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Mondays through Thursdays; 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Fridays and 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturdays. The bank is located at 191 Main St.

Acoustic Fridays are taking place at the MCL Grand every Friday starting at 7 p.m.

Health fair set

The Back 2 School Health Fair will be held from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Aug. 11 at Harmon High School, 1250 W. Round Grove Road. Back 2 School Health Fair is a coalition of churches, schools, social services and civic agencies collaborating with area businesses to give those less fortunate an opportunity to start the school year off right.

This is a family-friendly event providing an opportunity to increase awareness and availability of education, health and social services for parents and children through interactive, informative activities, displays and entertainment. The event will help students in the Lewisville Independent School District community with many of their school-related needs, including distributing free backpacks and school supplies to about 3,000 children.

As a one-stop destination, the fair will help prepare economically disadvantaged children go back to school through services provided by the community agencies that specialize in helping children.

Advance registration is required. Parents can register children and receive supply vouchers at one of four sign-up events being held at local Walmart stores: July 13, 10 a.m.-2 p.m., Walmart store at 801 Main Street.

Flower Mound Walking Women

The Flower Mound Walking Women meet-up group is a free all women's walking group that walks various trails in Flower Mound. The group encourages those interested to bring their socialized dog. Castle Hills sets events

August in Castle Hills is all about the arts and last minute fun before the new school year begins. Bring family and friends to a magic show on Aug. 3 and on Aug. 24 see a free movie showing. On Aug. 10, come out and listen to the Orquesta Cervantes and finally, begin the school year with a bang at the BMX Stunt Show. All events are free and take place in the Castle Hills Village Shops Plaza, 2560 King Arthur Blvd. at Lady of the Lake in the Castle Hills neighborhood.

The schedule of events for August includes:

Friday, Aug. 3, "Concentrated Insanity" Magic Show, 7 p.m.: Magician Christopher Lyle's most popular show is best described using the adjectives Magic, Mystery, Madness, Mayhem and Danger. He has the ability to take the wildest and most incredibly amazing feats and weave them into a unique tapestry of vivid illusion. This show may be too intense for small children. Don't forget to bring your own chairs and blankets for seating.

Friday, Aug. 10, Live Music at the Plaza: Orquesta Cervantes, 6:30-8:30 p.m.: Residents will be treated to the finest in Tropical/Afro-Caribbean music. The mix of salsa, cumbia, and Latin pop dance music is fun for the entire family. This is rescheduled from May cancelation due to rain.

Friday, Aug. 17, Back-to-School Bash presents: BMX Stunt Show, 6:30 to 7 p.m. and DJ, Games and Activities, 7-9pm: The Back-to-School Bash starts off with a high-flying, back-flipping BMX Stunt show by United Freestyle Stunt Team. Some other heart-stopping stunts will be tail-whips, 360's, mega spins and other jaw dropping stunts you'll have to come out to see. For information visit: http://www.unitedfreestyle.com. After the show, stay for the DJ, relay games and other activities.

Friday, Aug. 24, Movie Night at the Plaza: "Mirror, Mirror" (Rated PG), 7:30 p.m.: Bring your own chairs and blankets to enjoy the timeless fairy tale Snow White, as it gets a dazzling makeover in this fantasy adventure starring Julia Roberts as the Evil Queen and newcomer Lily Collins as the fair-skinned Princess Snow White.

Keep Lewisville Beautiful (KLB) recognizes one residential and one business each month from April through October for the "Yard of the Month." KLB is looking for nominations.
