Motor vehicle thefts down 40 percent in Allen

Published: Wednesday, August 1, 2012 4:58 PM CDT
The Allen Police Department has reported a 40 percent drop in the number of motor vehicle thefts in the first six months of 2012 compared to the same time period last year.

The report, released July 25 by the Allen Police Department, indicates that only 26 vehicles were reported stolen in the first half of the year. This time last year, 44 vehicles had been stolen.

The drop can be attributed to the unusually high number of motor vehicle theft reports last year and a more proactive response from local property managers, said Sgt. Jon Felty of the department's community relations unit.

Motor vehicle theft has historically been the least frequently reported property crime in the city, usually outpaced in sheer numbers by burglary of habitation or burglary of motor vehicle reports, Felty said.

"Even though, numerically speaking, it may be a smaller piece of the pie, it was a problem last year, so I'm thrilled that we've been able to address it and get it down," he said. "Motor vehicle theft, that's a pretty traumatic event for someone. When you walk and your vehicle's just gone, that's a pretty big deal to them."

The report comes just three months after Allen PD launched its Project C.L.E.A.N. initiative, which encourages residents to be proactive in reporting crime. A report detailing a decline in burglary of habitation rates will be released later this week, Felty said.
