It's official.

Dwayne Henderson, a longtime member of the McKinney Fire Department, is now both a battalion chief and the city fire marshal.

Henderson has been assuming the duties of interim fire marshal since John Nickles retired last May. McKinney Fire Chief Danny Kistner announced early this week that Henderson has been given the permanent fire marshal position.

As fire marshal, Henderson oversees the city's fire prevention program, fire code plan review and enforcement, fire inspections and the fire investigation programs.

Since joining the MFD in 1996, Henderson was promoted through the ranks to battalion chief in charge of planning and development. He holds certifications through the state of Texas as a master firefighter, intermediate instructor, basic inspector and hazardous-materials technician. He also is a licensed paramedic. Henderson is married and has three children.

"Chief Henderson has done an outstanding job as interim fire marshal," Kistner said. "He has reviewed operations and processes within the office, evaluated programs and responsibilities of personnel within the operation and implemented positive changes. He facilitated a smooth transition following the retirement of his predecessor, ensuring that our customers and citizens continue to receive the highest level of customer service, and that life safety and community risk reduction efforts remain the top priority of this area of fire department operations."

Henderson said, "I appreciate the confidence that Chief Kistner has shown in my ability to manage this important area of fire department responsibilities. Fire prevention through planning, engineering and technology affords us the chance to save property and lives. I look forward to the opportunities and challenges of my new position."

Kistner added, "The McKinney Fire Department is committed to providing our citizens with the highest level of customer service through positive fire and life safety efforts, as well as emergency response."
