Lewisville safety clowns participate in record-setting pie fight

Published: Friday, August 3, 2012 4:30 PM CDT
Lewisville residents and fire safety clowns joined more than 2,000 clowns and spectators for the "Biggest Shaving Cream Pie Fight On Earth" -- setting the world record.

On Tuesday, the Lewisville Life and Fire Safety (LAFS) clowns participated in the pie fight held at American Airlines Center. LAFS joined Alley and ringmaster Brian Crawford Scott

from Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey, members from the Funnyatrics Clown Program at Children's Medical Center and clowns who traveled as far as New York and all across Texas. The chaos began at 7:45 p.m. and within 60 seconds a new world record was set.

"When they said 3,2,1 go -- it was just insanity," said Jeff "Radio" Christenson, a LAFS clown. "The pies had to fly for at least 60 seconds, and we made it. People from all over the nation came and wanted to be part of the record. We also got to perform a safety lessons preshow in front 2,000 people, which is the largest crowd we've performed in front of. We've already told them that anytime they do anything we want to be a part of it. Being around professional clowns has helped improve the LAFS clowning techniques, and we enjoy being involved with Ringling."

Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey planned for months for the event and Guinness World Records attempt. More than 300 1-˝ oz. bars of soap were needed to create 2,000 shaving cream pies. The largest shaving cream pie fight was a new record category and had a minimum requirement of 684 participants. Sara Wilcox, Guinness World Records adjudicator, made the official announcement after the pie fight.

"It was just elation when we got the official announcement. We had 2,000 people watching and everyone cheered. The roar of the crowd was unbelievable," Christenson said. "We've worked with Ringling for years because we wanted to learn the art of clowning from professional clowns. They wanted to get a couple charities involved with this event to be the beneficiaries, and they chose us as one of those."

Funnyatrics Clown Program at Children's Medical Center was also chosen as a beneficiary by Ringling Bros. Funnyatrics is a therapeutic clowning program at Children's Medical Center. The program is funded by donations. LAFS received a $5,000 check as the other beneficiary. Christenson said they will use the money to help build sets and other equipment they might need to continue their mission.

"Every year we fund the program from own pocket and a few grants. This will be a nice breather," Christenson said. "Right now we're about three-quarters of the way through creating program this year's program, so most of the money will go toward next year."

The "Biggest Shaving Cream Pie Fight On Earth" helped celebrate the beginning of International Clown Week and the Dallas/Fort Worth debut of Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey presents "FULLY CHARGEDSM." According to Clowns of America International, Aug. 1-7 is International Clown Week, which honors the charitable activities of clowns and clowning.

LAFS is an educational non-profit organization that empowers young people how to save themselves in an emergency. The LAFS educators have been instructing area youth for roughly 12 years now. Each year, they share their safety messages with approximately 8000 students and teachers. LAFS clowns include Radio, Embers, Petunia and Ashes. John Lundy works sounds for the group.
