Church offers meals, prayer to city youth

The McKinney First Baptist Church is offering residents age 18 and younger two kinds of food: for the body and for the soul.
A communitywide summer food-service program got under way last week at the church, located at 401 W. Erwin Ave. in McKinney. The program offers free dinner meals for all children and youth from 5:30 p.m. to 6:45 p.m. Tuesdays and Wednesdays through Aug. 29.
No meals will be offered during the week of Labor Day, but beginning Monday, Sept. 10, the church will begin serving free meals to residents under age 18 from 5:30 p.m. to 6:45 p.m. Monday through Friday.
"SHOP is a one-hour prayer service whereby the community is invited to come and pray for their local church, community and nation," said Pastor Louis Rosenthal. "And after dinner on Wednesdays we have evening Bible study whereby we study the Bible chapter by chapter and verse by verse."
He emphasized, "It is not mandatory for children who participate in our food ministry that they attend our prayer service or Bible study. However, we will encourage everyone to come and get some spiritual food to go along with their physical food."
He added, "Jesus often met a person's physical need which opened the door for him to meet their spiritual needs. We aim to follow the model Jesus left us and both our newly launched food service ministry and our current clothing ministry help us meet real needs in our community."
Although McKinney First Baptist has a predominately black congregation, Rosenthal said the free meals will be offered to youth of all races and backgrounds. "Red, brown, yellow, black or white, all are precious in God's sight, and all are welcome," he said.
"The McKinney First Baptist Church is a church that desires to minister to the community and to the total needs of a person," Rosenthal added. "Most people don't care how much you know until they know how much you care. We believe in these difficult times we're living in that God is going to bring the world to the doorstep of the church. The church must be equipped to meet the manifold needs of the community in which it is located."
