Devil's Advocate: Collin County drivers revving up at speedway in Mesquite
BY Devin Hasson, dhasson@starlocalnews.com
While the Devil's Bowl Speedway standings still reflect a heavy leaning toward drivers from Rowlett, Sachse and Sunnyvale, drivers from Plano, McKinney and Allen have been making some headway on the raceway.
Sunnyvale resident Harry Hronas has been in control of the Street Stocks division at Devil's Bowl Speedway since the start of the season.
That consistent success has allowed Hronas to maintain his grip on the overall points lead even if he is not at his best.
The tightest division continues to be the Late Models, where Wills Point's Patrik Daniel still holds a slim lead over Johnny Philpot Jr. of Sunnyvale. Daniel took fifth place at the feature race on July 21. For the season, he has four feature victories and 2,480 points. Philpot, who has two feature wins and two heat victories, took third place to creep closer to the top spot (2,420 points).
Among other locals looking to make a move up the standings are Plano's Gary Lowe, who sits in 10th place (1,150) and McKinney's Nate Jantz, who is 12th (1,090).
In the USA Modifieds division, Princeton's Danny Caldwell continued his season-long dominance by picking up his eighth feature victory in nine starts. Caldwell, who also added a heat win, has 2,590 points. Richard McGibboney of Dallas is a distant second (2,030), while Mesquite's Trent Dorman sits in third (1,750).
Allen's Bill Blue is one of only three drivers to make all nine starts this season.
Blue is in fifth place (1,060), while McKinney's Danny Florence is in ninth (470) despite making only three starts.
Dallas resident Chris Cleveland picked up his first feature victory of the season in the USA Limited Modifieds class, but was not able to make up much ground on points leader Jimmy Staats of Edgewood, who took second. Staats, who has four victories this year, has 2,400 points, giving him a comfortable lead over Cleveland (2,070).
Rowlett's Steve Sickels won his fifth heat race, the most of any driver in the division.
In the Sprint Series of Texas, Edd French of Keller held off Mesquite's Raven Culp to take the checkered flag in the A Main Feature race. Rick Summers of Mesquite took fourth in the feature race after winning one of the three heat races. In the B Main Feature, Waco's Kenny Elwood claimed first place, followed by Junior Jenkins of Greenville.
The Devil's Bowl Speedway racing season is in the middle of a lengthy break, with drivers not scheduled to return to action until Aug. 18.
