City celebrating its parks system
By Kenny Green, kgreen@starlocalnews.com
July is Parks and Recreation Month in the city of Mesquite. The city will ask the community to “Get Wild” about parks and recreation and use July as an opportunity to get out and benefit from the city’s trails, pools and parks.
As part of the celebration, the city will have a Facebook contest throughout the Month. Each week the parks and recreation department will have a new theme to get people outside and enjoy the city’s amenities.
As part of the contest, people will take a picture during each theme and post their final photograph to the city of Mesquite’s Facebook page. The city staff will pick from the submissions and the selected winners will earn prizes.
The city will also celebrate the month with an event on Friday, July 13 at City Lake Park, 1515 North Galloway Ave. The event will begin at 7 p.m. and attendees will have the opportunity to enjoy snow cones, hamster balls, face painting and movie trivia.
“We will also have a water balloon slingshot. It will be one of those things to help people stay cool during the summer,” Smith said.
Around dusk, the parks and recreation department will begin its movies in the park with a screening of TinTin playing for your entertainment.
“The main thing we will have at the event is out movies in the park screening,” Smith said. “This is an opportunity for us to celebrate outdoor recreation and get the community to explore our parks system.”
Smith said the department’s pools should also be busy during the month of July as the temperatures continue to rise.
“Our main pool is at City Lake Park. We have had a very good turnout so far with several days at capacity. I am sure we will have some large turnouts at the pools during July,” Smith said.
