The annual National Night Out event was observed in a big way Tuesday in McKinney, with at least 23 neighborhoods participating.

Despite triple-digit heat, neighbors convened to get acquainted with each other and to meet members of the McKinney Fire Department, police department and city officials.

Mayor Brian Loughmiller and city council members visited several of the neighborhood parties around town. "If we didn't get to your neighborhood, it wasn't because we didn't try," he said.

National Night Out is an annual program sponsored by the National Association of Town Watch (NATW). According to an NATW spokesperson, National Night Out is "designed to heighten crime- and drug-prevention awareness, generate support for and participation in local anti-crime programs, strengthen neighborhood spirit and police-community partnerships and send a message to criminals letting them know that neighborhoods are organized and fighting back."

At a regular city council meeting Monday, the mayor read a proclamation designating Aug. 7 as National Night Out in McKinney. He presented copies of the proclamation to Police Chief Doug Kowalski and Fire Chief Danny Kistner.

"The city of McKinney plays a vital role in assisting the McKinney police and fire departments through cooperative crime-, drug- and violence-prevention efforts," Loughmiller said. "It is essential that all citizens of McKinney be aware of the importance of crime- and fire-prevention programs and the impact their participation can have on reducing crime, drug and violence in McKinney."
