From TISCA to NISCA: Lady Dragons win national title

Published: Tuesday, August 14, 2012 5:41 PM CDT
In 2011, Southlake Carroll's swimming and diving team had their most productive season to date as the Dragons and Lady Dragons completed a sweep of the UIL Class 5A State Championships.

With such a large amount of success in a state the size of Texas, many believed the Dragons had one of the top squads not only in the state, but in the nation. Now they know.

Carroll's girls swimming and dive team been named the NISCA (National Interscholastic Swim Coaches Association) National Dual Meet Champions, all classes, for 2011-12. Their point total of 6,396 points beat Carmel (Indiana) by just two points.

Carroll's boys team, meanwhile, finished second in the over-1,900-students Public School Division and was sixth among all classifications. Both results are the highest finish ever for the Carroll swimming and diving teams in the seven years they have entered the event.

"Most of the best teams in the nation do enter the event," said Kevin Murphy, Carroll head coach. "I think our showing really says good things about the program. It was our highest finish on either side, and I think that really says a lot about the middle part of our program. Our depth defines us and it shows here, because we finished very highly and dominated the state meets even though we only won two individual events."

While the Lady Dragons edged out Carmel, the boys team (5,938) placed just behind New Trier (Ill.) with 6,304 points. In all, 336 programs submitted entries (184 boys, 152 girls).

"We were second in the largest classification and sixth overall," Murphy said. "And a lot of the teams we were going against are private schools that have all kinds of foreign exchange students and talented swimmers. Our showing against other public schools was very strong."

The NISCA meet consists of teams getting points based on the time standards they submit from the season. The times are placed into a PowerPoint table presentation with each time and event receiving a designated amount of points. Additionally, relay events have a higher value at NISCA than the district, regional and state meets.

"At state, you can only have one relay team and up to four individuals in each event," Murphy said. "Here you can submit times for two relay teams but just three individuals."

Murphy added Carroll's standings could have been even higher on the boys side had they had more than one diver to enter.

With a banner 2011-12 season in the past, the squads shift their focus to their 2012-13 campaigns, which get underway shortly.

"It's a whole new beginning for us," Murphy said. "We have a lot of kids moving on and other kids who are now looking to move on and try and take those same spots at the state meet. They've been waiting their turn and now it's time for them to claim those leading roles."

The squad also selected their captains for the upcoming seasons. Boys captains include John Remetta, Austin Nguyenphu, Jake Tovey and Jacob Elieson. Girls captains are Katie Shackelford, Emily Zapinski, Jennie Hall and Lindsay Schultz. Lauren Crown and Bryce Klein will captain the dive teams.
