Search continues for armed robbery suspects

Published: Friday, August 17, 2012 6:52 PM CDT
Police are searching for three black males they believe are responsible for a string of aggravated robberies in east Plano, including one at Haggard Park.

Nine incidents have occurred over the past two months, with the majority of the cases inside an area bordered by Park Boulevard, U.S. 75, Plano Parkway and Jupiter Road. A 10th incident occurred at the Amber Vista Apartments on East 15th Street, but the victim refused to fill out a police report.

The assailants brandished a weapon in each incident, with the weapon of choice typically being a small black semi-automatic handgun, said Officer David Tilley, Plano PD spokesman.

"Everything has been pretty much concentrated in that general area, which has a large Hispanic population," said Tilley, who added that seven of the 10 victims have been Hispanic males. "There is a lot of shopping at the Plano Bazaar at 14th and Jupiter, so you have a lot of residents who walk to the businesses in the area that are geared toward the Hispanic population."

One of the robberies occurred at 9:45 a.m. in the 1400 block of Jupiter Road, while another occurred at 4:10 p.m. in the 1800 block of K Avenue. The brazenness of the suspects to commit crimes in high-traffic areas during the day is something Tilley said is unusual.

"What is a lot of concern to us is that it is still daylight during the time a lot of the offenses are taking place," Tilley said. "A lot of the criminals that commit these offenses do them at night so people can't see them. At 9:45 in the morning there are a lot of people. When you have someone walking around committing violent offenses with a handgun in broad daylight, those are people we need to get off the streets."

The most recent robbery occurred Wednesday at the Woodlands of Plano in the 1300 block of Sherrye Drive. This is the only one of the nine crimes where all three suspects were seen together. Typically, only two of the three suspects, who are described as black males between the ages of 19 and 25 years old, were present at scene, Tilley said.

Police are also looking for a 1995 to 2000 Chevrolet Lumina with dark tinted windows that was seen at one of the scenes.

While the investigation into the crimes continues, Tilley urged all residents to be cautious and do everything they can to prevent becoming a victim.

"If you are going to be walking home late at night, you need to always be looking over your shoulder," he said. "It is unfortunate, but until we get these guys off the street we want everyone to be aware of their surroundings."

Anyone with information on the whereabouts of the three suspects is asked to call the Plano Police Department Tip Line at 972-941-2148 or the Crime Stoppers Tip Line at 877-373-8477. Crime Stoppers tipsters may be eligible for a reward of up to $5,000.

" I wish they would try that on me. As a CHL holder it would be their last robbery. "
