Rowlett participating in aerial spraying for mosquitoes

Published: Wednesday, August 22, 2012 5:02 PM CDT
An Emergency City Council Meeting took place Monday, Aug. 20, to finalize whether or not the city of Rowlett would participate in Dallas County's aerial mosquito spraying program.

After conducting their own research and carefully considering all of the input offered by citizens, whether in person or via email and social media, the Rowlett City Council voted to opt in by a 4-3 vote. The dissenting votes were cast by Rowlett Mayor Todd Gottel, councilman Chris Kilgore and mayor pro tem Doug Phillips.

"We had a number of citizens speak in favor or against the spraying," said Joe Tilger, environmental services manager. "The folks that were against it were concerned of the effects on insects and their domestic animals."

Tilger said the county is using a product called Duett that according to the manufacturer is not harmful to humans or domestic animals.

"It's an EPA approved chemical that has been used in other metropolitan areas without any reported problems," Tilger said. "During normal application there are no risks to humans but there are some to honeybees and fish or other aquatic vertebrae."

Tilger said the aerial spraying is more effective than the ground spraying the county has been doing since it blankets the entire city and not just certain areas.

"Ground spraying is done on paved roadways so there are areas it will not get to," Tilger said. "The aerial spraying will produce a much higher rate of mosquito knockdown with more widespread coverage."

According to Dallas County officials, the aerial spraying for Rowlett will occur last night and tonight between the hours of 9 p.m. and 1 a.m., weather permitting.

A sixth confirmed Human case of West Nile Virus Disease in a resident of Rowlett has also been reported by the Dallas County Health Department to Rowlett officials. The confirmed case was near the intersection of Rowlett Road and Chaha Road in the 75088 zip code.
