Softball: Lady Cougars open playoffs against Frenship
By Justin Thomas, jthomas@starlocalnews.com
The Colony and softball coach Deana Coleman believe they have a club that can make a playoff run.
But after being swept in the bi-district round last year by Wolfforth Frenship, the Lady Cougars only have one thing on their mind: revenge.
The Colony gets a rematch with Frenship Friday when it opens a bi-district best-of-3 series against the Lady Tigers in Abilene.
And while The Colony enters as the No. 4 seed from District 4-4A after falling in a third-place game Saturday against Lake Dallas, the Lady Cougars have proven capable against quality opponents, winning a program-record 20 games.
Last Friday, The Colony came up short against district unbeaten Wichita Falls Rider, 1-0, for the second time this season. Of the Lady Cougars' six losses on the season, four have come by one run and the other two have been by two runs.
Rider previously defeated Frenship in a non-district tournament, 8-1.
"Even though we're still very young, we've gone toe-to-toe with some of the best teams in the area," Coleman said. "I'm proud of the kids and if we pitch well and play well in the field, I think we have a good chance."
The Colony closed the regular season Friday with a 12-2 win against Denton.
Lindsay Jacobs picked up the win in the circle of the run-shortened game. At the plate, Coleman said the Lady Cougars received contributions from up-and-down the lineup.
In the loss Saturday against Lake Dallas, The Colony led, 1-0, entering the fifth inning.
"We had a tough call that didn't go our way that would have gotten us out of the inning," Coleman said. "But they took advantage and scored four runs in the inning."
Jacobs threw the first 4.2 innings before giving way to Tori Rendon for some extra work to remain sharp for the postseason if necessary.
