Rowlett student arrested with gun at school

Rowlett police arrested a Rowlett High School student on Thursday, Sept 20, after the student, 18-year-old Carlos Bernard Perkins, was found in possession of a loaded 9MM pistol on the school’s campus.

The school resource officer assigned to the campus was notified by a teacher that

Perkins was possibly in possession of a weapon in the classroom. The officer notified an assistant principal and together they went to the classroom to investigate.

“It’s really important that if a student hears threats, the possibility of a fight or any other violent action happening at school that they contact us so we can investigate. It’s our job to investigate these possible incidents and to keep the students safe at school,” said Lt. David Nabors, with the Rowlett Police Department’s criminal investigations division.

Perkins was removed from classroom, along with his back pack, and taken to the school’s office. The officer asked Perkins if he was carrying a gun in his backpack and he told the officer that he did. The officer opened the backpack and found a loaded 9MM semi-automatic pistol in the backpack.

“We were tipped off by a student that told a teacher, who then notified the SRO,” Nabors said.

Perkins was arrested and charged with unlawful carry of a weapon in a weapon free zone, a 2nd degree felony. He is currently being held in the Rowlett Jail.

There were no injuries in the incident and the Rowlett Police Department is still investigating the incident to determine why Perkins brought the weapon to school. Another issue investigators are trying to determine is where the gun came from. When a gun is sold from person to person in Texas, no paperwork is required.

"When a person initially buys a firearm it is put in a national database. In Texas there is only paperwork done if the firearm is sold by another dealer to an individual. No paperwork is required if a gun is sold person- to-person. We are investigating a few leads and maybe able to locate where the gun came from,” Nabors said.

The police department credits the lack of an incident to the quick action of students, educators and the police working together to identify a dangerous situation and removing a threat before anyone was injured.
