65 neighborhood block parties held throughout city

Coppell neighborhoods outdid themselves again on Oct. 2.
In recent years, they had already received state and national recognition several times for outstanding participation with National Night Out activities.
Last year, there were 59 neighborhood block parties throughout Coppell, one of the largest numbers of block parties of any city of its size in the nation.
“We had 65 block parties throughout the city,” said officer R.J. Harr of the Coppell Police Department. “This is a record number for us. The police department used 29 teams for officers, volunteers and the mayor and members of the city council to visit the block parties.”
“In addition,” he said, “we had the volunteers from the Citizens Police Academy, Junior Police Academy and the Coppell Police Explorers to help us visit the parties. We also had two K-9 units and two motorcycle units visiting the parties.”
He added, “Everyone had a great time, and the evening was a huge success.”
Also, especially to the delight of the children, the National Night Out Knight and McGruff the Crime Dog paid visits to several of the block parties.
Neighbors, some who have known each other for years and others who met for the first time, got together for cookouts, ice cream socials and other get-togethers to observe National Night Out, as did neighbors in hundreds of other cities throughout America.
National Night Out has grown from just a few block parties in 1991 to the 65 block parties that were held this year.
In 2006, 2008 and 2011, Coppell was ranked No. 1 in the nation by the National Association of Town Watch for cities in Coppell's population category.
The National Association of Town Watch has recognized Coppell with an outstanding participation award every year for the past 20 years.
Harr said, “These awards are just a reflection of our citizen's efforts to make this community a safer place to live.”
