District schedules academy information nights

Plano ISD has scheduled a series of meetings to give parents further information on the Plano ISD Academy High School.
The first of the meetings will be held at 7 p.m. Nov. 1 at the academy campus, 1701 Alma Road.
Five more meetings regarding the Plano ISD Academy are planned for Nov. 5 at Williams High School, Nov. 7 at Shepton High School, Nov. 8 at the Plano ISD Academy, Nov. 14 at Clark High School and Nov. 19 at the Plano ISD Academy. All will be held at 7 p.m.
Renee Godi, principal of the Plano ISD Academy, said the purpose of the meetings is to get accurate information to parents and students about the learning environment of the academy and help them decide whether they want their children to attend the school. Attendance at one of the meetings is required if a parent wishes to apply their children to the school, she said.
"It will be just such a different environment than a feeder high school," she said. "... It's pretty important that parents know before they sign up for this school what the academics will look like, what the culture will look like and what the building will look like."
Parents will participate in two sessions, each regarding academics and the culture of the school, with room at the end for questions and answers.
The Plano ISD Academy will focus on project-based learning and the interdisciplinary connections between science, technology, engineering, arts and math, Godi said.
"Through answering a problem or problem solving, they begin to ask further questions in the process of learning," she said. "The teacher's job in that is to facilitate that learning."
Godi said there is no criteria a student has to fulfill to attend the school other than having a learning style complementary with the environment of the school.
"It's not even about just coming to my academy," she said. "What is the right environment that my child can thrive in? That could be a normal high school ... but this is another opportunity for students to connect in a different way."
Information meetings regarding the district's other two academies are also planned. On Nov. 6, a session focused on the International Baccalaureate academy will be held at Plano East Senior High. A session regarding the district's health sciences academy will be held on Nov. 7 at Williams High School. Both meetings start at 7 p.m.
