To the Editor:
I have a friend who endured two suicides in her family. One was her brother-in-law who shot himself in his office, and the other was her brother who hung himself outside his home. Both men were working and successful, left behind families, and did not involve themselves in drugs. Her brother-in-law was dealing with some mental issues, while her brother's death came as a complete shock. The sister of her brother-in-law also attempted suicide late last year but survived and remained in the hospital for some time. My friend and her family neither judged nor condemned these individuals, although they continue their struggle to understand why as they courageously go on with their own lives.
It seems to me that no matter how close we are to people, we cannot know what really goes on deep in their minds or hearts. Why do some people act one way and others act another. Some people grow up facing many difficulties but manage to rise above it while others sink deeper in the hole. Maybe that's because God made us all different and gave us our free will.
I read Ms. Pfeiffer's article in which she expresses her opinion that suicide is selfish. My impression is that she is extremely angry, so much so that there is no room for any other emotion. She has no facts to share and, certainly, in the case of Whitney Houston, she seems to think she is privy to information. I am surprised that a paper would be so irresponsible as to print an opinion that is not only devoid of facts, but without compassion and empathy. This article is extremely judgmental, insensitive and offensive to anyone who reads it.
