Overwhelmingly Potent Success (OPS)

Published: Tuesday, November 6, 2012 10:42 PM CST
Each year during the spring semester, the Celina High School Band sends recordings of music played at the three contests throughout the school year to a procession of judges' panels, to be judged for awards and recognition. This process is called the Outstanding Performance Series, or OPS. Celina Band has created a tradition of OPS excellence with numerous state championships, recognitions, and titles.

This year, three pieces of music were sent to be judged at OPS, including the concert pieces Balkanya (Van der Roost) and Old Scottish Melody (Wiley), and a march called The Belle of Chicago (Sousa). At each stage of judging, the music is played for a panel of three judges who critique the pieces based on technical skill, musicality, and tone, and then given a score of points and ranked among the other pieces from the same division. At region OPS judging, Old Scottish Melody placed fifth, and Balkanya placed third in the concert category, where the first three places advanced, sending Balkanya to the Area judging round, The Belle of Chicago placed second in the March category, and also advanced to the Area judging round. Both pieces succeeded at Area and advanced to the State judging round, which was judged at the TBA conference in July. In the final ranking process, Celina's rendition of The Belle of Chicago placed 4th in the state in the march category, and Balkanya placed 13th in the concert category. Both pieces competed against approximately fifty other pieces in this round, making Celina's 2012 OPS season one worthy of pride and a title of success.
