State VB Tourney on TV

For those that can't make it to the Curtis Culwell Center in Garland to watch Lovejoy compete in the Class 4A State Volleyball Tournament, all matches from the multi-class UIL event will be broadcast live.

The matches will air on Time Warner Cable's SportsChannel and FoxSportsSouthwest.com.

Play-by-play announcer Lincoln Rose will be joined by former Texas high school volleyball coaches Brenda Kitten of Hereford and Patty Dominguez of Monahans to call the action.

Lovejoy faces Cedar Park in the semis at 7 p.m. Thursday with the winner advancing to Saturday's 4:30 p.m. final.

Lady Eagles above .500

The Allen girls basketball team is 2-1 out of the gates for the 2012-13 season.

The Lady Eagles began with an emphatic 69-34 win over The Colony on Nov. 6. Allen opened up an 18-8 advantage after the first quarter and never looked back, led by 18 points from sophomore McKenzie Martin and 10 from junior Anna Horowitz.

Allen enjoyed an equally strong start on offense on Friday against Highland Park but the team's 22-19 lead after one frame was unable to hold as the Lady Eagles dropped a 50-48 decision.

Horowitz led the team with 11 points followed by 10 from junior Ericka May, as Allen was outscored, 13-9, in the fourth quarter.

The team continued play Tuesday against Garland Naaman Forest, where the Lady Eagles broke the .500 plateau with a 62-52 victory. May led the squad with 20 points.

Allen returns to the court today for the first leg of its host tourney, Lady Eagle Hoopfest.

Allen opens season with OT loss

The Allen boys basketball endured a baptism by fire to the open its 2012-13 campaign, playing past regulation Tuesday against Garland Lakeview Centennial.

In the end, the Eagles fell to the Patriots in a 78-71 decision.

Allen was tasked with overcoming a 38-30 deficit at halftime after being outscored by Lakeview, 24-16, in the second quarter.

Gridlocked at 66-66 after regulation, the Patriots outscored the Eagles, 12-5, in overtime.

Three players broke double figures in the scoring column, led by 16 points from senior Cameron Epps, 13 from senior Danny Gordon and 12 from junior Nic Castrillon.

The Eagles resume play Monday at 7:30 p.m. when they host West Mesquite.

Piles heading to Davidson

While the start of basketball season means the last year in the careers of many varsity players, Allen senior Rachel Piles will continue on the court.

That's because Piles has signed with Davidson.

A multi-year varsity player, Piles will next play for Davidson, which was recently rated the No. 11 best private college in the country by US News and World Report.

Quest, Cherry named Coach of the Year

Lovejoy's Adam Cherry and Allen's Justin Quest have been named Texas Tennis Association Coaches of the Year for 2011-12.

Cherry won for Class 3A and Quest for 5A.

Both coaches have continued their success into the fall.

Moving up to 4A, Cherry led Lovejoy to an undefeated district regular season, second-place finish at the district tournament and fifth-place showing at regionals.

Quest helped navigate Allen through one of the toughest district in the state with the Eagles falling one victory short of the regional tournament.

"It's nice to get some statewide recognition for our program and these kids," Quest said. "Hopefully it speaks to the consistency we have been able to maintain over the past few years."

Both will be honored next month at the Wilson/TTCA Hall of Fame Banquet.

Landry Award nominations

For the third straight year, North Texas GMC Dealers will present the area's top high school football player with The Landry Award.

The honor recognizes the Metroplex's top high school player. The recipient will be chosen by a voting panel of former coaches and players, media members and local leaders. The Landry Award program will also recognize the Whataburger All-North Texas Team.

Fans can vote at: LandryAward.com.

Five finalists will be announced in November with 2012's official winner named Dec. 6 at a ceremony at the Communities Foundation of Texas.

Hall of Honor nominations

Though the Allen ISD began enshrining people into its Hall of Honor when Eagle Stadium opened, the district is still seeking future nominees.

Candidates must be ex-athletes, employees, teams or supporters of AISD. They must have graduated from Allen at least 10 years ago and demonstrated good character throughout their post-high school athletic career. If a nominee is deceased, a representative of his/her family may accept the honor.

Nomination forms can be found at: allenisd.org.

Nominations should include as much detail as possible to help choose the best candidates. The selection committee will name recipients at an annual AISD Hall of Honor banquet.
