Playoff time: Bobcats begin postseason run against Krum

Although the Bobcats would have liked another district championship after entering the final week of the regular season with a 3-0 mark against 10-3A foes, Celina has bigger goals ahead.
“We probably got a better road in the playoffs than Argyle did,” said Bill Elliott, Celina head coach. “The teams they have to face are probably a little tougher.”
Friday night’s district showdown featured two 8-1 teams that were a combined 6-0 in district play. A win meant the district title for one team while a loss meant entering the postseason as a two seed for the other.
The Bobcats looked more than capable in the early going, scooping up an Eagle fumble and taking it 34 yards for a touchdown. However, the score would be Celina’s final points of the night, as Argyle went on to score 45 unanswered points for the 38-point beat down.
“It just went down hill for us,” Elliott said. “[Argyle] whipped our tails.”
The Celina offense only managed 58 total yards in the game and failed to add any points to Nick Grant’s early fumble return. That lack of success made things more difficult for the Bobcats on the defensive side of the ball, as the Eagles used a balanced attack to assert its dominance in the game.
“That was probably the best defense and the best offense that we’ve seen all year,” Elliott said.
Argyle junior quarterback Brandon Boyzuick completed 11-of-20 pass attempts for 55 yards, three touchdowns and one interception while getting 200 yards from his team’s ground game. The bulk of those 200 yards came courtesy of running back Nick Ralston, who finished the night with 158 yards and two touchdowns on 29 carries.
“When you play a team that good, it’s always good for you,” Elliott said.
Sophomore quarterback Nathan Elliott had a tougher time throwing the ball than Boyzuick, finishing the game with just 11 yards, no touchdowns and one interception after completing just 6-of-21 attempts. Senior Ben Thiel became Celina’s leading rusher in the game after using three carries to tally 25 yards.
No Celina player could match the productivity of junior receiver Ian Sadler, who reached the end zone four different times in the game after catching nine passes for 180 yards and running for another eight yards, including a 7-yard touchdown with just 43 seconds left in the opening half.
“[Sadler] is one of the best football players in [Class] 3A right now,” coach Elliott said. “He made a lot of plays.”
The loss means Celina will enter the postseason with an 8-2 mark and will now prepare for a 7:30 p.m. Thursday matchup against Krum at Denton’s C.H. Collins Athletic Complex.
“Krum has a great team that’s really young,” coach Elliott said. “We’re going to have our hands full.”
Krum (9-1) will be making its postseason debut after finishing the 2011 season with a 6-4 mark. Meanwhile, the Bobcats will be coming off a loss for just the second time this season after rattling off eight straight wins following a season-opening defeat to Melissa on Sept. 1.
“We have to move on,” coach Elliott said. “We have a short turn around so we have to turn this loss into a positive.”
