The Celina Balloon Festival is set to return for another year after a vote Monday by the Celina Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors set a tentative schedule for the eighth annual rendition of the event.

Celina chamber president David Whiteman said that the official attendance total from this year's festival was between 15,000 and 18,000 people and that it earned money, though he could not disclose how much due to chamber policy.

“Mother Nature threw us a very tough curveball,” he said during a presentation this week before city council, referring to the cold weather that set in the night before the festival began. “... It's impossible not to think about what it could have been if it would have been 15 or 20 degrees warmer, but you just have to put that aside and not question it. We're thrilled with where we came out.”

Whether or not the festival will return must be voted on each year by the chamber. Next year's festival is tentatively scheduled for the weekend of Sept. 14 and 15. A sunrise service the Sunday of the festival will be a new addition to the event, and Whiteman said that every area church will be encouraged to participate.

“We're going to change it up every year,” he said.
