Payback: Broncos open district with rout of former foe

McKinney Boyd wanted no part of its underdog branding in Friday's dominant district-opening performance against Plano West.
In their best performance of the season, the Broncos dismantled the Wolves in a 55-28 win to stretch their winning streak to four games and establish an early lead in the playoff race.
Boyd (4-2, 1-0) scored on all five of its first-half possessions and opened the second half with a 77-yard kickoff return for a touchdown from senior running back Bryan Driskell, who scored four touchdowns and rushed for 201 yards.
The Broncos running game was in full force against the Wolves (3-3, 0-1). They tallied 407 rushing yards split between Driskell, junior quarterback Curtis Ladd, senior Kalvon Howard and sophomore Dedrick Scrivens.
Howard rushed for 106 yards and two touchdowns, while Ladd added 60 yards on the ground to the 134 yards and two touchdowns he threw for on 12-of-19 passing (63 percent) in another strong performance.
We had to be able to establish the running game, and I thought we did a pretty good job of that tonight, Drake said. The defense created some turnovers and did a good job, especially in the first half.
Boyd had every aspect of its offense operating in the first half and drove down the field at will. The Broncos converted on fourth-and-1 on three consecutive drives to open the game and finished each drive by scoring, starting with a 25-yard pass from Ladd to Driskell.
We felt good about the push we were getting up front, the holes we were creating in the running game. Drake said. I just felt like we needed to take the opportunity to try and keep the drive alive, and our kids were able to do that and turn them into points.
The Broncos kept the momentum rolling when senior defensive back Daylon Markham picked off senior quarterback Travis Korry on West's ensuing possession. That turnover resulted in more points for Boyd and began a 12-play, 80-yard drive capped on a 4-yard touchdown rush from Driskell.
The Broncos forced four turnovers on the night and scored after three. They also managed to hold West to 188 rushing yards, well off the 244.8 yards per game average they carried into Friday.
Boyd continued its relentless attack with a pair of field goals by senior kicker Patrick Ladd, from 20 and 28 yards, and a 20-yard touchdown pass from Ladd to Scrivens in the second quarter to head into halftime ahead, 27-7. The Wolves picked up their lone score on a 49-yard pass from Korry to sophomore running back Sotonya Jamabo.
Korry was West's most effective offensive weapon. He threw for 210 yards and two touchdowns on 14-and-22 (64 percent), but also had a pair of interceptions. West junior running back Auston Anderson led the team with 86 rushing yards and two touchdowns on the ground.
Driskell's kickoff return to open the second half gave the Broncos a comfortable 34-7 lead, though they had to hold off a resurgent West offense that posted a pair of touchdowns in the third quarter on a 28-yard pass from Korry to senior wideout Connor Doyle and an 8-yard rush from Anderson.
The Wolves still didn't pick up any ground though, as Boyd answered with a 21-point third pieced together on Driskell's return, a 31-yard touchdown rush from Howard and a 32-yard rush from Driskell to carry a 48-21 lead into the fourth quarter.
With the game all but decided, Boyd and West each pitched in one more score to settle the final. Howard scored on a four-yard carry for the Broncos, while Anderson capped the night with a 30-yard touchdown run.
The win put the Broncos in a three-way tie with Plano Senior and Allen for first place in 10-5A.
I'll say it's special simply because it was our first time to go back into that district and compete again, Drake said. We've never beaten a Plano school, and for our kids to come out the way they did and finish that football game in a great fashion, I mean that's a big moment for us. But we expect to win when we come on the field too. I don't want anybody to think that our kids didn't expect to win coming out here. That was our focus, that was our mission and we accomplished that tonight. Now we've got to move forward.
Boyd will be back in action Friday, Oct. 19 when it takes on Plano at Clark Stadium at 7:30 p.m.
West will host Allen at Kimbrough Stadium at the same time.
