10-4A GIRLS BASKETBALL: Poteet knocks off Conrad, West Mesquite suffers first loss

Published: Wednesday, November 14, 2012 10:20 PM CST
After a rough weekend in tournament play, Poteet got back on the winning track on Tuesday with a 65-32 victory over Conrad.

The Pirates, who are now 2-4 overall, used a stingy defensive effort, limiting Conrad to just 13 points in the first half to take a 14-point lead. They kept up the pressure in the second half, closing the game on a 25-12 run to pull away.

Shyari Cheathem scored 17 points and Kyla Nelson added 10 to pace the scoring effort.

Poteet had won just one of four games at the Frisco ISD Tournament over the weekend.

The Pirates got their lone victory when Cheathem scored 26 points in a 52-39 win over Lake Dallas.

They also dropped games against Richardson (56-26), Frisco (52-32) and Flower Mound Marcus (79-29).

Poteet will play on the road on Friday against Rockwall and then return home to host Rockwall-Heath on Tuesday.

West Mesquite is coming off back-to-back trips to the regional tournament and has high hopes once again.

The Wranglers were ranked No. 4 in the Texas Girls Coaches Association Class 4A state poll, but undefeated seasons are rare for even the best of teams, and they had one of those nights on Tuesday with a 65-52 loss to Arlington Seguin.

West Mesquite (2-1) trailed 36-26 at halftime and despite making a small run in the fourth quarter, it was not enough.

Claudia Price scored 16 points to lead the Wranglers, while Tamia Cunigan and Leah Hamilton added 11 and 10 points, respectively.

West Mesquite will get plenty of work in during the next week. The Wranglers are scheduled to compete in the Allen Tournament on Thursday through Saturday. They will then host Horn on Monday and Lakeview on Tuesday.
