Friends of Coppell Nature Park and RunOn! will again host Deck the Trails: A 5K Off Road Challenge Saturday morning.

Upgraded to a 5K this year, more than 800 runners are expected for the event which features a trail run utilizing portions of the sports fields at Wagon Wheel Park and the wooded, nature trail system within Coppell Nature Park. Deck the Trails is part of the Run On! Run Project race series.

“With adventure racing becoming increasingly popular, Deck the Trails provides an introduction to off-road running for both seasoned and recreational runners,” said Tanna Wood, Racing Systems race director. “Combining elements of cross-country racing on grass and trail running through the woods, the event is a new experience for many participants and is among the first of its kind in North Texas.”

A Christmas tree, food, drinks, music, and a family fun run will also be part of the event. At 7:30 a.m. Santa and an Elf will arrive by Coppell fire truck to pose for photos with adults and children. Winners of the various race divisions will receive their first gifts of the holiday season – custom Christmas ornaments to commemorate their performance.

Deck the Trails will benefit both Friends of Coppell Nature Park and the city’s Make a Child Smile Christmas gift collection. Race participants are encouraged to bring an age- and gender-specific wrapped toy to support the Make a Child Smile initiative, which provides assistance to families in need during the holiday season. Financial proceeds from the race will aid in the maintenance of the Coppell Nature Park’s trail system as well as development of the Park’s environmental education center.

Registration begins at 7 a.m. The Family Fun Run is at 8 a.m. The 5K Off Road Challenge starts at 8:30 a.m. Online registration is available at runontexas.com or getmeregistered.com web sites.

Pleased with last year’s event, Bill Sundermann, Friends of Coppell Nature Park president, said, “Participants really seemed to enjoy running through the park and the trails held up very well.  We are thrilled with the feedback we have received and look forward to making Deck the Trails 2012 even more challenging and fun.”
