The Pummeling of Pearce: Dominating win part of Lady Eagles' 9-2 start

The Allen girls basketball team set a new high for points scored this season with 72.
Yet that's not necessarily the number that jumps out from Saturday's game against Richardson Pearce as it was the seven points the Lady Mustangs scored that appear most noteworthy in the Lady Eagles' 72-7 victory.
"Yeah ... that was an interesting game," said Sean Weibling, Allen head coach. "We hit some shots early and Pearce was having a lot of trouble getting their offense going, turning the ball over a bunch, so we built a lead quickly."
"After that, we stopped pressing and backed off into a zone," Weibling said. "You don't want to run up the score or anything like that, but we still want the girls to be playing hard and we still want to improve, so we worked on a lot of situational defense and specific sets on offense."
Ensuing quarters of 17-2 and 16-2 set the final at 72-7.
No Pearce player scored more than two points, a total surpassed by all nine Allen players (Martin, Horowitz, seniors Tammara Turner, Kelsey Paul, Rachel Piles, juniors Amanda Brown, Ericka May, Briana Mitchell and sophomore Kayla Bise) to enter the box score Saturday.
Things were significantly closer Tuesday night versus Mesquite, but Allen still picked up its third straight win and improved to 9-2 overall with a 53-40 victory.
"We were a little bit rusty at the start," Weibling said, "but that's always the case after Thanksgiving break. We picked it up as the night went along and were able to get back into our routine and get another win."
Several of the same names led the scoring ledger with May putting up 14 points, Turner scoring 11, Bise registering nine and Horowitz accounting for seven.
Allen now shifts back to tournament mode.
Finishing second at their host event (the Lady Eagle Hoopfest) two weeks ago, Allen begins play in the Royse City Tournament today. The Lady Eagles won that event last year after defeating three of their four opponents by at least 16 points and upending the host team in the finals, 59-39.
"We like going out to Royse City," Weibling said. "It's a good tournament for us because we get to see some teams we usually wouldn't ... and since we won this tournament last year, I think that will put a little more pressure on us."
Pressure Weibling is glad his team will experience.
"Absolutely," he said. "You want to see what your team will play like when they are fatigued, when they aren't at their best; see how they react to adversity."
Weibling can relate as he has been dealing with his own adversity of late.
"Yeah, it sucks not being out there," he said. "But I'm working on bouncing back as quickly as possible."
Weibling added that he was hopeful he could return from his surgery and be on the court next week. Following the Royse City Tournament, Allen will face Mesquite Horn on Tuesday before a string of games against former district foes Flower Mound Marcus, Flower Mound and Lewisville.
"Our goal right now is to continue growing each week," Weibling said. "We've got a tough month ahead but I think it will be a good prep for district."
The Lady Eagles open 10-5A play Jan. 4 on the road against Plano East.
