Holidaze in the Park set for Saturday: Little Elm Park to be transformed into real-life Candyland

Published: Friday, November 30, 2012 12:11 PM CST
Little Elm Park will be transformed into a colorful confectionery from 3 to 8:30 p.m. on Saturday for the town's annual “Holidaze in the Park” festival. The theme for this year's festival is Candyland, and the park will be decorated to resemble locations from the popular children's board game, such as Peppermint Forest and Gumdrop Mountain.

In addition, actors will dress up as character's from the game to pose for photos with children and pass out candy. Snowflake Lake will be decorated with blue and white snowflakes and serve as the location for performances from children's choirs at 4:15 p.m. and Brittnee Belt at 7 p.m. Belt is a singer and performer from Little Elm best known for the song “Secret Identity.”

“Imagine the Candyland board game coming to life, in real time and full-size,” said Joni Neyland, co-chair for the event, in a press release. “That’s what we’re working toward. We’ve let our imaginations run loose, and with the hard work of so many people, Candyland will emerge in all its fantastic flavors, colors and sights.”

Santa's house will be located at Gumdrop Mountain along with sitting and eating areas. Rainbow Trail will feature a collection of vendors selling handmade crafts. Chocolate Swamp will feature an indoor chocolate bar.

The free festival will begin at 3 p.m with the town's annual Christmas parade, which will be led by the Little Elm High School Marching Band. The parade will start on Parkside Drive and travel along Willowlake Drive, Meadowbend Drive, Lakeshore Drive and Main Street before ending near the north entrance to the park.

The event will also feature a number of children's activities, including train rides, a balloon artist, face painter, arts and craft vendors and a bounce house. The festival will culminate with a fireworks display at 8:30 p.m.

The town's official tree lighting ceremony will be held at 6:15 p.m.

Alcohol and glass containers are prohibited in Little Elm Park. Pets are also not allowed, with the exception of service animals.
