Football: Cowboys clamp down on Hebron

Published: Tuesday, October 16, 2012 4:44 PM CDT
Hawks Stadium in Carrollton is typically a place of comfort for Hebron's football team.

A venue where the squad often pleases its fans with rousing victories which has resulted in the stadium's nickname "The Woodshed".

But on Friday it was Hebron who was taken out back by an unbeaten Coppell team as the Cowboys - ranked No. 4 in the state by the Associated Press - clamped down on the Hawk offense in a 29-3 victory.

In the loss, Hebron (3-3, 0-1) suffered its first double-digit home margin of defeat since 2008 when it came up short against Plano Senior, 41-28.

Playing without the services of running back Dezmond Wortham, Hebron was limited to 29 rushing yards on 28 carries, including losing 37 yards as a result of sacks.

"I'm very happy with the effort of our kids," said Joe McBride, Coppell head coach. "We know all about The Woodshed and that Hebron is a very strong team. We knew it was going to be a tough game, but we really played well and gave a great effort."

For the game, Coppell (6-0, 1-0) outgained Hebron, 379-75. Hebron quarterback Carson Proffitt did complete 8-of-11 passes but for just 46 yards.

"We always emphasize stopping the run first," McBride said. "We have a good defensive front to help get that done and on Friday, they had a great night. We really ran to the ball well, played physically and kept chopping away. All 11 guys played well."

Coppell also recorded a safety in the first quarter for a 9-0 lead when they tackled a Hebron ball-carrier in the end zone.

Vandy Parkes led Hebron's offense with 51 total yards, including five receptions, while Braelen Evans had 44 total yards.

Offensively, Coppell leaned on a balanced rushing attack in which they averaged 5.8 yards per carry.

Gavin McDaniel led the way with 20 carries for 118 yards, while Charles West had 12 carries for 93 yards. Luke Jenner (eight carries for 53 yards) and Jacob Logan (four carries for 10 yards) chipped in rushing touchdowns, while quarterback Colby Mahon completed 6-of-14 passes for 99 yards, including a 13-yard touchdown pass to Cameron Smith.

"I was really happy with the way our tailbacks played," McBride said. "And I liked the fact that we didn't have one guy carrying us. They all got in there and did a good job and our perimeter blocking was very effective."

Coppell looks to stay perfect on the season at 7:30 p.m. Friday at Flower Mound (3-3, 1-0). It will be an emotional night for the Cowboys, who will take the field for the first time without captain Jacob Logan, who went missing Sunday afternoon at Possum Kingdom Lake.

"We're holding up as good as expected and are trying to move on but our hearts are broken," McBride said. "Anybody that has played football knows that within the locker room it is very tight. We consider each other family and that's why it hurts so much. But it's also why it's important to be together and pull tight. We're in a place and time where we all love each other."

Hebron looks to bounce back at the same time and date at Denton Ryan (3-2, 1-0).
