Volleyball: Marcus opens playoffs against powerhouse Colleyville

Marcus' volleyball team will have its hands full Tuesday if they hope to advance out of the first round of the Class 5A playoffs.

The Lady Marauders open the postseason on the road at 6:30 p.m. against a Colleyville Heritage team currently ranked No. 2 in the state by lonestarvolleyball.com.

But after closing District 5-5A competition with matches against Coppell, Hebron and Flower Mound (two of which are also ranked), the Lady Marauders will not be intimidated by other top-flight competition and hope that confidence will spur them on to an upset.

"Colleyville has a very good team," said Jennifer Cron, Marcus head coach. "To be ranked second in the state, they're obviously pretty talented, even though they lost their last match against Euless Trinity. They're a pretty offensive-minded team and have a very good outside hitter. But at the same time, they play well on defense and are balanced. They're similar in talent to Coppell and Flower Mound in a lot of ways and we're hoping that our experience in district has prepared us for the playoffs."

Marcus enters the playoffs as the No. 4 seed from 5-5A after coming up short in their final three matches, including a loss Tuesday against Hebron (19-25, 25-21, 25-21, 25-16).

"It was our senior night and the girls were pretty fired up," Cron said. "We had a good crowd and that gave us some extra motivation. We had a good first game but we just made too many errors after that and couldn't overcome the mistakes."

Regan McGuire paced Marcus with 10 kills and six blocks, while Mackenzie Pearson had seven kills, Mattie Rainwater had 19 assists and Kelsee Vandiver had 23 digs.

Errors hurt Marcus last Friday as well as the Lady Marauders dropped a match against Flower Mound (25-23, 25-21, 25-21).

"We're hoping to get healthy for the playoffs," Cron said. "We had a lot of matches where we had certain players who were playing well but we weren't all on the same page. If we can get everyone playing to their capabilities, then I think we can pull it out. It should be a good match."

Flower Mound, meanwhile, enters the playoffs as the No. 2 seed from the district and kicks off its postseason at 7 p.m. Tuesday against L.D. Bell at Byron Nelson High School in Trophy Club.

The Lady Jaguars have bounced back from a Oct. 12 loss against Coppell to win three consecutive matches, including Tuesday over Denton Ryan (25-4, 25-6, 25-15).
