11-5A GIRLS BASKETBALL: Eagles roll over Garland in district-opening win

Published: Saturday, December 15, 2012 12:30 AM CST
Rowlett was the only Garland ISD team to put together a winning record during non-district play.

But after having a bye on the opening day of the 11-5A season on Tuesday, the Eagles has to wait until Friday to see if that early success carried over into district competition.

It is only one game, but so far, so good for Rowlett, which had no problem with Garland on Friday with a 71-30 victory.

The Eagles (12-7) set the tone from the opening tip, racing to a 22-7 lead after one quarter.

It would not get any better for the Owls from there, as Rowlett pushed the advantage to 40-16 at halftime, and pulled away even further in the second half.

Dominique Oliver led the Eagles with 14 points, with Courtney Fine and Harlie Greer adding 11 and 10 points, respectively.

Rowlett and Naaman Forest, which had a bye on Friday after defeating South Garland in its 11-5A opener, are tied for second with 1-0 records behind Lakeview, which made an early statement in knocking off defending district champion Sachse in a 59-47 victory on Friday to improve to 2-0.

The Mustangs (7-9, 1-1) prefer low-scoring, defensive games and it followed that formula in the first half to take a 23-18 lead.

But the Patriots were able to push the tempo in the second half and Sachse could not keep up. Lakeview scored 24 points in the third quarter to take a five-point lead and was able to pull away during the final eight minutes.

Lorian Benjamin, Monica Dorsey and Cynthia Matthews paced the Mustang offense with nine points each.

Sachse slips back into a tie for fourth place at 1-1 with South Garland, who defeated North Garland on Friday.

The teams will get a brief break from 11-5A play with a district-wide bye on Tuesday before returning to the court on Friday for one final game before the Christmas holiday.
